      So WHAT?!?!?!

Like I said, its just like saying "This new car is great but for GODs SAKE i need petrol rather than the coal I used to use!"

If it needs 2Gb, i'm sure an extra £20 or so wont break the bank. Hardware is cheaper than its ever been and getting cheaper daily (I saw a PC with a 17" LCD monitor etc for £299 on the telly before) so why moan that the new OS wont run on the crappy old hardware you had two years ago?

This is the 'enhanced security' built by MS after all the slatings on the history of security and Micrsoft programs. It normally asks you to run the program as an Administrator (right click on a program, and you should see Run as.....) or as a Local Service on the machine.

Not everyone knows the requirements of the OSes and your local stores will flog the cheapest built machines, which then means your 'local joe' has to spend even more to get things running, or in some cases find that there are no extra slots to add new equipment (you will normally find the machines are sold with 2 Memory Chips of 512MB each - possibly taking up all slots on the motherboard as opposed to 1x1GB chip leaving free slots). Alright you can replace Dimms on a 1 chip basis -in the older days with Simms you had to install in pairs).

its just the fact that these machines are sold with the bare minimum to just get by (alright most people will find this okay) but others won't when they start to tax the machines with their latest software

To provide remote support (via RDP or Remote Assitance) to a Vista machine from XP you have to start hacking the registry or disable the encrypted features through the Control Panel or set the features in Group policy on a Network.

Its just the fact that these Surfs are sold with no suspension lift and road tyres (alright most people will find this OK) but others wont when they start to tax their Surfs with muddy pay and play days.

                Your point is?

An enthusiast who wants to do more than the machine is designed to do will upgrade it. Be it a couple of 1Gb strips, or a set of mud tyres and a bodylift.

It doesn't matter Gra. Just like it doesn't matter if you dont know what keeps an airliner in the air. It just 'does', and that is enough for the non-enthusiast who just sees a home PC as a toy or a simple tool.

thats really my point. i started this thread as i saw on another thread " vista sucks" and i thought to myself,i have had a year of trouble free computing with this lap top and it using vista.i use it to surf the net, play a few online games, but mostly at work, for emails and the spreadsheet facility i have with excel.this spreadsheet set upo alone is worth its weight in gold to me. it can take a set of lorentz transformations and work the triple integrals out for me. it can do stuff the ols excel would have taken a week to write, in about an hour or so,cos it works out and runs algorithms on my behalf. i have NO idea how the nuts and bolts work, suffice to say that they do and well.

wtf does all this mean !!

AMD - manufacturers name of the processor running the machine
durion64x2 - is AMDs processor model name
64Bitx2 - processor runs in 64Bit mode (like intel core duo)

Nvidia - manufacturer of the Graphics Card
Geforce Go 7300 - model of the card
128Mb -size of the Memory on the card

1.6GB x2 L2 cache - 1.6GB could be the disk size or more likely 1.6Ghz which is the speed of the processor
L2 cache - Level 2 cache - this acts as a buffer between the processor and the memory for swapping in/out control sequences

PS I believe it was me that stated Vista is crap. I have worked both different versions of MS OSes (from Wind 3.1, Win 95, Win98, Win98 SE, Win NT 3.51, Win NT 4.0, Win XP and finally Vista) and personally I hate vista due to previous items stated plus many more.

I have bought machines with Vista on and used the Vista license for backwards licensing purpose to install XP over the top.

But why put up with something that has such non-intuitive features? Oh yeah, its cos it's written by the underdog computer company, so is 'cooler' in some strange way

Dont get me wrong, Apple's machines are lovely, and I'd much rather have one of those cube things in the living room than a standard PC box if it had an OS that doesn't irritate me.

On the other hand, why bother? i'd rather have a small Vaio laptop with Vista

What do you have on your DVD player? A menu with eject disc as one of the options or a button?

Both, but 'eject disk' doesn't suggest the disk is going to be binned.

B0ll0cks you do. I'm not talking about a computer, I'm talking about the one under your telly. You don't have to use a menu, you just press the f'ing button, same as on a mac (top right corner)
