One thing you fail to mention however. If both speeds are relative to a fixed point, then both speeds are actually also relative to each other.

True, but that just complicates the process of measuring their 'actual' speeds, and keeping them the same.

Just on a pedantic note, it isn't, actually. That is a totally different theorem. Also, if the speed that you are walking away from the object is 10MPH, then theoretically you both have a speed of 5MPH, not 10MPH. (Working on the scenario posted, that is).

OK, yes, it is a consequence of Special Relativity. And yes, that is the case unless you define a single point somewhere as being 'static'. But you're also right, this is pure pedantry, and not relevant to the issue.
