i have put the surf into retirement as i am doing a few miles for work these days,i have got myself a mark 3 golf gti, but when i got it the number plates wher a bit tatty and could not make out the letters on the rear one. the log book was away getting my details on so i got some ''german'' style ones off the web (i thought it would set the old shed off).so after they have been on about a month,i drive a mile from my house where there is a ''car (gypsy fair)boot sale'' on which i would thinkits full of dodgy goods, i was stop by two police pc in a bmw both of them wearing ''terminator'' style shades, they stopped for not having uk standard number plates. i got a £30 fine.i dont argue with the fine or the fact that the plates do'nt come into uk standards even though the lettering is the right size and gaps, its the point when they stopped my they said i had to take the plates off there and then,as i had no other plates to put on that they would have to sieze the car.know that it is pointless being argumentative with him i said fair enough.at this point it came back on the radio that the car was insured and mot'ed and that my licence was clean.then his attitude changed he become friendley and let me on my way as long as i changed the plates. is it me do these fascists try to provoke you in to a fight with them to get a bigger charge on you.
i try to support the police in what they do but sometimes i think they need to start looking at themselves before people will give them the respect they deserve

    Hi Colin,
How are you? Yes, can be frustrating when stopped by police. I certainly would`nt let my truck be loaded on a flatbed and driven away for having the wrong number plates! I would suffer with bigger charges for resisting the system but at least I would win in principle! I guess you would have been well p.....d off if they had`nt have changed their tone.
On a lighter note- surf into retirement, are you keeping it as a second vehicle?
    cheers,

yeah, keeping the surf couldn't part with it don't really need the surf for work any more all i carry now is a couple files and a pen.the surf can not compete with the 40 mpg of the golf.as for the police you can not argue with them just nod and agree

Yes mate it's an atitude thing which I hate.

It's hard enough booking folk without rubbing salt in the wounds. As for towing your car away I think that was absolute bull. I normally just take the plates and use them as evidence If and only if the client becomes abusive rude and obstructive I always Leave the car with the customer.

As for shades I think eye contact is essential when giving out tickets.

You should have complained about oppresive conduct, I would. You have rights. One minor error doesn't constitute bull $$$$e from a stroppy arse.

Sorry about the plates but the DVLA own them and if they get altered it's an offence however petty.

I normally just ask the driver to get the proper ones back on then book them if they don't.

          Cheers JB

If he booked you for having a head light out then he's a sad git since you carried a spare bulb you were extremely conscientious most would have helped you change it.

It's embarrasing when you have just pulled someone over for having no rear lights and they turn round and say well your front ones not working either

Bulbs blow even on police cars. If you ever get stopped for a light out remember there's no offence if it was working when you started out on your journey and it went pop while driving.

I have touch wood only been booked 3 times and that was for parking.

However the last one was in Spain and I got a 150 euro fine for being 10 mins over .

lol I agree with the general tone here... I got pulled in my old Mk IV Golf going over 90mph. The copper who pulled me was very polite and justified his position, told me exactly why he was going to fine me, asked me if I had any questions and basically was pleasant as posible at the expense of £60. Flip side of the coin I relied on my SatNav to take me to Calais... ended u in Antwerped, on a street where you need a permit to drive, told the officer that I was english etc and he told me to turn around, space was too small and a tram was coming so I turned about 10m further down the street, only yo be booked and fined on the spot £60 (100 euros) for "Not following orders..." His attitude sucked, arrogand as anything... There's no point arguing with the Gestapo but they'd be far better received if they just adjusted their attitudes. It's not like I was beating up old ladies for christ sake!

Sometimes its not worth arguing... if they are local bobbies and you really wind them up with "rights" etc, they can make your life more of a pain later on down the line

I heard once that is less of a charge for having the numberplate missing all together then having an "illegal" one. Can't be right surely???

Its NEVER worth arguing, much better to have reasoned chat with them, much more likely to get your point of view across. If a proper injustice has been done, sort it out later via the proper channels. If not, suck it up and pay your dues.

most "rozzers" as you put it spend there working life dealing with the same scum {scottish convicted usless men} before any do gooder starts, over and over as our system sucks. So pay the fine and let them get on with their day.
O and ask yourself if they let me off cause I was less pikey looking than you would that be okay or would you rather we were all dealt with the same.
I've been done for plates see pics of my 200sx on other threads lol. And yes the traffic cop was a hard on, I think thats a requirement for the post. But I knew I was wrong so I shut it and took the ticket.
Is there not a motorbike thread on our forum running with posts screaming for him to be done or worse???

Well that sucks Colin, and it does sound like the copper was trying to mess you around/provoke things.

Many years ago I had a mkII Cavalier that wasn't in the best of shape. The front number-plate was cracked along it's length, and a lot of muck had got in and it was obscuring the letters. In addition to that the hand-brake was non existant. I got pulled one day going down the motorway because of the number-plate. Because of the poor state of the car the coppers did a quick once-over, and soon found the dodgy hand-brake. The gave me a producer, and told me I had to get the defects fixed in a week, certified by an MOT garage, and present the proof to a Police station and it would go no further. I duly got it all fixed and certified, and thought he matter was done and dusted. Around 5 months later I found myself with a court summons for apparently having masking tape over the plates, and no brakes! Unfortunately, being young and stupid I got royally screwed by the court and ended up with a fine equivalent to nearly a months wages.

It's a power trip thing, especially if they have just come out of the factory. The last time i got pulled was in my Defender on Nov 5th 2001. Just left Newbury race course (watching the firework display) and was going down the A4 towards Theal. I went past the pub (I think it's called the Sun Inn) and there was a cop car going the other way. I looked in my mirror like you do and I could see them hoof it round and come after me.

They gave me the blue light treatment and I pulled over in a bus stop. The bloke and woman got out and said "We have just seen you leaving the pub, how much have you had to drink??" I couldn't believe it, assuming I left the pub just because I drove past it. So I told them in no uncertain terms that I never even went near the pub.

They must have realised I was telling the truth, and then started looking over my Military Defender to find something else wrong and started telling me the the ATU wing box was against the law because I might damage a pedestrian if I hit one.

I said I have just left the Army after 8 years service and said that they were talking rubbish. I then went into the construction and use regulations. They then realised I knew more than them, and they scuttled back to their car. I kicked myself afterwards for not getting their numbers, I would have made an official complaint.

                          Total nobs......

a quick reply to all on to days events,i have spoke to the roads policing inspector today, i told him i have put my hands up to the plates being wrong and have changed them today. we got on about the attitude of his pc's and said that they should have not told me they could seize my car. after a lengthy chat about policing he told my the dvla have the power to change my plate so that the non standard plates can not be used again, he also said if you have a private plate and the lettering has been moved to spell a name the dvla have the power to take it off you and put a new reg number on.Durham is a key area at the moment for the police and the dvla to inforce the law.YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED

just to quote you YOSHIE, i am not a do gooder, i respect the work the police do,if it wasn't for the police i would be out of a job as i also work in a prison. i know for a fact if i spoke to prisoners the way the police had spoke to me they would not repect me. i don't have the hard task like you of ''managing'' a prison just the lesser job of teaching them a trade in there rehabilitation..
