  • Champion Winch?

Would this do my Surf??? Would you need at least 4 tonne pull ?? Is it a good price for such a thing?? Dont want one thats to heavy for the front end. Thought this would be a happy medium rather than a 12000lb thingy.

    Winch

Given up on the roof rack idea just now, especially if i get one of these bad boys

well from sumone who works with winches day in and day out,2 things worry me bout that winch,1st there is no S.W.L stated, safe working load,ie wot u can pull with it(but it says not large 4x4,so u wud assume 1.5tonne plus),and 2nd the cable size, cables for that sort of thing should be 10mm2,and theres is 9.2mm2,sounds anal i know, but ive seen them snap!

not a great deal lol, dont get me wrong,it will prob be ok,just that its missing vital info worries me,and the cable is"aircraft",whatever that is lol, winch cable should have a centre core, normally red so u can see if u damage it,and normally comes metric size,ie 8mm,10mm,etc etc,to give u an idea for motorcycle recovery winch we use 8mm,for car/van we use 10mm2?

Champion are as good as any other entry level winch.

The only thing i would say is go for one with detachable solenoids and hide them up in the engine bay somewhere, I say that for two reasons

                              1) they will stay drier, wet solenoid packs will stop winches from working probably more often than any other cause. Often the solenoids can be cleaned and dried and everything'll be fine again, but it still leaves you stuck until someone else tugs you out.

                              2) we're all too aware of the potential cooling problems our surfs have, so i would prefer to have as little as possible blocking the airflow to the rad especially when it's already struggling due to being caked in mud.
