mark, i have started a new job teaching in a collage and sometimes in a prison,its through a agency who then pay me via a umbrella (money laundering) company, after three weeks i could not account for £50 per week then after a phone call i discovered i was paying employers n.i. plus then employees n.i .it worked out in total £81 a week,when i spoke to the robbers they claimed to have told me (which they did'nt). i have tried going down the self employed route but now being in teaching i can not do that. after a week of ranting at the agency i said i would leave, the agency said they would look bad at the collage if i left ,so now they have increased my hourly rate by 12.5% to cover the cost i am incuring.it makes me wonder what they are charging the collage.
all i know now is just to watch the every move of these so called umbrella companys after all they are just in it for the money

As I mentioned, it's dependent upon the company to whom you are contracting/being contracted. A lot of places these days just get an agency to sort their staff for them, as it takes all the load of finding suitable candidates off them. Less paperwork for them too. Agencies/umbrella companies, are a quick and idle method for companies who don't mind paying through the nose, or don't have too exacting a standard in regard to whom they contract.

man im lucky,
i charge a basic £30 per hour,
i hve to invoice an agency weekly,and they pay that per hour plus any business mileage plus vat without any deductions.they did initially try to make deductions till i pointed out i am my own "umbrella" company,ie own a small ltd contracting company

if they are treating you this bad mate you would be better off finding something else!

i was told you must have an agency if your contracting, its the law.

I guess the agency would say that as they wanna make money for doing nothing. ANYONE can be a contractor.

even if you go self employed with a limited company, you will still have to pay your own national insurance AND your limited companies national insurance.
i have looked into doing this, and ive found its less hastle using an umbrella, especially since the fee is only 2%

i mean (if you were limited company), you could put asside an estimated tax ammount each month, into a high intrest savings account for a tax year, and then pay an accountant to do it for you, but you will still pay £500 - £800 for the accountant at the end of the year.

thats what i thought but some weeks my expenses are over £900 quid.

and if i were a limited company then my expenses would be quite a bit more over that. reason being as you can claim for almost anything so long as its for your job/company. so that means, clothes, shoes, jumpers, coats, im even thinking car repairs as you need the car for work. so this means brakes etc. and if you can get a mechanic friend to order the bits and fit them and write whatever on the bill then there is a lot more options too. this means nudge bars, big wheels, lift kits
you only get the vat back though

So its back to the Drawing Board, I have a few Plans for the next few days Searching for Something far Better
