OK, had some spare time, so here is the text of that letter typed out.

                  Dear Mr

Many thanks for your letter stating your concerns over the environment amd the proposed use / taxation of bio-fuels. I am well aware of the benbefits of bio-fuels, both to agriculture and to the environment, and believe that the UK bio fuels industry should be encouraged as far as possible.

The Policy Commission on the Future of Farming and Food, which reported in Januay 2002, recommended the Government reduce the duty on bio fuels to the level charged on other clean fuels.

I support bio fuels as a means of reducing overall carbon emissions whilst providing a sustainable option for farmers and am, therefore, pleased to note that the European Bio-fuels Directive (which sets indicative targets for alternative fuels, such as 5.75 per cent of the market share by 2010) will stimulate demand for bio-fuels in this country.

I further believe that impetus for bio-fuels will come from the renewable transport fuel obligation and will stimulate the market for bio-fuels by setting a framework for investment and longer term market certainty for suppliers.

As I understand it, in 2002 in order to encourage the use of bio fuels a 20 pence per litre duty differential was introduced on all bio-fuels. The Budget announced that this level of duty on bio-fuels is guaranteed until 2007-08 and there are ongoing discussions as to what the duty incentive will be for 2008-09. As you say, however, this is considerably less than the differential on LPG.

In light of your comments, I will forward your letter to the Chancellor, Gordon Brown MP, asking him to explain the Governments position. I will of course forward any response I receive.

However, if you feel I can help further please do not hesitate to get back in touch.

                  Yous sincerely,
Lots of political waffle, not a great amount of meat.

Whoah, got my reply from Rt Hon Michael Jack MP, and it's a bit more (well, as far as a politician goes) than just waffle. A page and a half, plus a report from the House of Commons Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Select Committee (which Michael Jack chairs) called "Climate change: the role of bioenergy". It will take a while for me to digest the report especially as I don't expect it to be an easy read.

                                Reply from Milliband

                                Hi All
I got a reply from one of David Millibands underlings

                                "BIOFUELS
Thank you for your email of 1 November to David Miliband about biofuels. I have been asked to reply.
As part of the overall strategy for improving sustainability and reducing the impact of climate change, the Government supports the production of transport biofuels. Biodiesel and bioethanol both benefit from a 20 pence per litre cut in the fuel duty rate. This has brought forward sales of around 33 million litres of biodiesel and 85 million litres of bioethanol during 2005 - 0.24% of all road fuel sales. Currently, the biodiesel comes from recycled waste vegetable oil, animal fats and imports, and the bioethanol comes from imports. However, a number of companies are either building, or planning to build, biofuel processing plants in the UK which will use UK-grown crops, such as oilseed rape, sugar beet or wheat, as a feedstock.
In order to further develop supply, the Government announced last November that a Renewable Transport Fuels Obligation will be introduced. This will require 5% of road fuel to come from a renewable source by 2010. Other measures are being considered, such as duty incentives to encourage the mixing of biomass with hydrocarbons in the conventional refinery process, and an enhanced capital allowance scheme for the cleanest biofuels processing plants. The latter scheme would allow the cost of capital assets to be written off against taxable profits. Regional support grants for capital investment in production plants are already available.
There is information about industrial crops and green fuels on our website at:
                                www.defra.gov.uk/farm/acu/acu.htm
I hope that you find this information useful.
                                Yours sincerely

So we get reduced duty! Already knew that....

Numbers sound tiny and most of the diesel is produced and used by tescos in their distribution fleet rumour has it. Good for them but not for us.

I have replied re-asking the questions they have avoided and will post any reply I get

                                What do you guys think...
