Can't say much about any of the F1 drivers really - someone made the sport SO safe and uninteresting that they might as well race in foam covered mini's round foam covered tracks. Boring as FECK now. BTCC for me if I could find time to watch it.

it doesnt matter that a bunch of overpaid prima donnas couldn't win the world cup
it doesn't matter that henmans out, buttons car is rubbish or that we lost the cricket 5-0.
it doesnt matter that we dont make cars here, or ships or anything else it seems.
it doesnt matter that we are governed by a bunch of fly by night twisters that would sell there own grandmother down the river for a quick profit, and take us to war just cos some clown from texas says so.
it doesn't matter that its getting so hard to live here, that even I have considered emigrating.
speed cameras dont matter, political correctness doesn't matter. queues dont matter. hose pipe bans dont matter, wind turbines springing up all over dont matter. blair v blair dont matter, the eu dont matter.noisy neighbours dont matter none of this matters, because this IS a great country, full of great people, and when all of the above has gone to dust, this will still be a great country. Thats a real nice sentiment mate, but Britain *was* great because of some of those things. I'm not pretending that not winning the world cup matters in the great scheme of things, though it would be nice to see some 'self belief' as a nation.

What matters are things like Britain once had the finest aviation industry in the world. Sold down the river by the labour govt. Britain once had many things to be proud of, deconstructed by successive govts. I love my country and I will get behind ANYTHING we embark upon.

I'm lucky enough to travel a lot through my work. USA, Canada, Australia mainly. As much as I love to go, and as easy it is to fall in love with foreign places, its all novelty. I've been out of the country enough now to love coming home. There's nothing like sitting in the back of the taxi from heathrow at 6am following a fun trip to a hot and sunny trip to the USA and looking out on the green fields and feeling glad to live here.

This is why I am sad that England are coming home, and sad at the 'kick them while they're down' attitude of so many.

Less kick them while they are down and more 'analyse the very reasons they are coming home at the fundamental pyschological level'. Although I agree with chillit on it not mattering, i don't agree that we should just give up - maybe just actually be a bit more proactive in actually criticising instead of namby pambying about - this country is too PC and frankly noone can take a bit of criticism as something to look at and think - "i WILL do better" rather than "you are being unfair". This counts for so many aspects of life in this country it's unreal and it annoys me. We're so busy reminiscing about our greatness that we fail to be great or to adapt to changes around us.

"Nothing mattering" doesn't mean that we can't do something about it, but it doesn't mean *I* want to do something about it. Just means I don't really care if anyone else does or not cos I'm getting on with my life, irrespective of those things the chillit mentioned. Which now you mention it could be the problem in this country
