veg oil kit - is it worth it?

Cheers Slug, just about full to the brim with knowledge now having spent 16 hours reading over the past few days...

now the only Q left is - how much of a pain is it to refill and is it worth the extra time. Once I have answered these - I'll do it.

Considering a gravity fed 1000l tank on shed roof....or hand pump.

Anyone have any novel time saving ways of filling the Surf with the veg oil ?

Put a 1000l tank on the shed roof and it will very soon be on the shed floor once it is full!!!

one thing i noticed is that when pouring from a 20ltr container the oil "gloops" and splashes a lot, stopped this by putting a small hole in the top, opposite the spout, (much like opening a can of jetII morr!), probably teaching to suck eggs but may save someones shoes!

I have done a few costs on the various options - A DIY fitted elsbett will pay for itsself in 6 months cf using diesel - a year for a professionally fitted one.

However using biodiesel at 85p/L will mean an pro fit elsbett will take 2 years to pay for its self. Based on new oil being 44p/L and paying tax on all of it. 250L/month.

I have been looking at bulk suppliers of oil - I can't find anyone who will supply 1000L of veg oil at a reasonable price - so far the cheapest is £700 for 1000L (without the tax)!!! You would have thought buying in bulk would be cheaper. I can get tax paid filtered waste oil for £700 delivered.

Does anyone know of a supplier - I would pay ~£450 for 1000L of new oil delivered.

The biggest problem I'm having is getting shut of the empty metal drums. The local tip let me take them there so long as I only take small quantities. First time I went, the guy nearly died when I uncovered my trailer that had about 20 drums in! Has anyone found a way of crushing the drums to make them smaller? I'd even thought about driving over them?

Take them to the local chippy and get them to fill with WVO?? Then filter it yourself?

According to some kit suppliers out there at -10 you need 20 % Dino to keep it flowing BTW.....

No I hadn't seen it... interesting stuff... although having had a 2 tank system in my old golf and had loads of insurance grief I am more tempted by the elsbett...66 days... nice...and of course you will pay the tax...!

I fully intend to pay the tax if I do the conversion...not worth the fine. Will just have to see how much SVO I actually use.....


Oh People of the shed - I'm sorry to have lead you on like this....maybe I dont belong...I was just tryin to fit in....ok ok I admit it - its a brick built garage...can I still be in the shed gang if its brick built ?

I've got a 1,000l tank in the garage and use a transfer pump to fill the Surf. Just like going to a regular garage now - except I don't have to pay the prices. I bought my pump off eBay, but you can buy similar ones: Northern Tool. The one here has a 2m inlet hose and 2m outlet. I've had to get longer hoses to reach into the back of the Surf, but you get the idea. Also think that Screwfix do a mains powered Clarke transfer pump. I know that a pump is more expense and hassle in the short term, but boy does it make a difference to how easy it is to fill up.

Another thought to chuck in to the debate is that when filling up on the one tank system how do you stop yourself over filling the tank. When filling my second tank I can actually see the level, on the original tank I'd have no chance - veg oil everywhere eh! - By the way 'white spirit' seems to fetch it off.

Also, having read through the thread again, I would agree that my two tank system would not be value for money for anyone who is making infrequent short journeys. I need to travel about ½ a mile (min.) before I flick the switch, and I tend to switch off at a smiliar distance from my destination (altough the purge cycle only takes 20 seconds). That said if I know that I'm going to be driving again within 30mins then I don't switch off the veg, since the engine will still be warm. (I've also added up to 50% veg oil to my first tank, during winter off course this percentage would have to drop.)

Although i read this entirely I have to note that no tests were conducted heating 100% veggie oil.

Long Chain Fatty Acids seem to be the offending article...my chemistry is a bit rusty...how can you breakdown long chain fatty acid captain beaky ? Alchohol springs to mind but I'm not sure...its been 10 years !

This surely cant be a shed ...
