  • mechanical advantages of a 3rd gen over a 2nd gen surf

i have recently placed a deposit on a 2nd gen surf that is on its way over from japan, 3.0 ssrx, 1994 limited in silver, 50,000 miles.
think i made a mistake on tuesday of test driving a 3rd generation in a local garage cos it was awesome.
can anyone tell me the mechanical advantages of owning a 3rd gen over a 2nd gen. obviously the look and interior are more modern but i think i will struggle to find another £1500 or so to go for the 3rd gen.
does the 3rd gen drive any better or will i still have a grin on my face with the 2nd gen.

    1st gen , 2nd gen , 3rd gen, you'll have a grin with all of them.
Nowt wrong with 2nd gens at all, there a fantastic truck, some people prefer the 2nd gen to the 3rd, but it's a personal choice.
    Personaly , I prefer the 2nd gens.

        3rd Gens,
        More leg room
        More cargo space
Full 4wd on tarmac and off road (center diff)
More gismos (compass, barometer, reversing mirror)
        16" wheels as standard
        Less body role on tarmac
        Intercooler option = more power
No more putting the bl**dy window down to open the tailgate
        Remote door locking as standard
Same chasis as Landcruiser colorado so plenty of spares

only bad thing is **** seats!!

You have opened up a can of worms!!!!!!!!

                      Hi

Having had all the surfs, manual, auto, 2.4, 3.0 etc.

It doesn't matter what you get as long as its a 3.0.

Test drive the different models and you'll see why.

thanks. almost bought a 2.4 off a neighbour for £2500. mint condition with 60,000 on it until i was told about the problems with the head etc.

since i have driven both 2nd and 3rd gen 3.0 litre autos and cant really tell much difference apart from the 3rd might handle a bit more car like on the road. interior is more modernon the 3rd gen though but as my first jeep im tending to think about sticking with the 2nd cos of the funds side of it and incase for some reason i decide jeeps are not for me having owned around 30 cars with numerous ones high performance.

ps. if ya know anyone wants a 1998 mondeo st24 v6 with 58000, like new, send me a message and i will forward details. need to sell it to fund my surf

                          Just traded in my 2nd Gen 3ltr ssr g for a 3rd Gen 3ltr ssr x limited,
                          amazed at the difference,
3rd gen is a much nicer vehicle to drive in my opinion, better acceleration, seats are just as comfy maybe a little firmer, better sound insulation, corners better with little or no body roll, I loved my 2nd gen, but have now found a better love, so much so that I am going to sell my BMW Z3 2.8 auto and have the 3rd Gen surf as my only car.

                          3rd Gen =

Standard only on the SSR-G, optional (but rareish) on the rest.

                              If yours is a 3rd gen, you'll have a lift-up tailgate.
