  • 'Dragging' rear wheels

    Hi,

I recently bought my first Surf ('91) and everything seems to be fine with this exception.

When in 4WD if I'm reversing in a tight manuver the rear wheels seem to be 'dragging'. I don't get this in 2WD. This leads me to belive that the diff on the rear wheels is locked. I've looked at the hubs and there is nothing to tell me which way lock's or unlocks. I've tried turning them but they seem pretty solid so I'd like a definate 'it's clockwise' before applying any force.

I've left it in 2WD until I can get this sorted.

    Cheers fellas!

DONT use it in 4WD on hard surfaces, there is no center diff which allows the front and rear wheels to move at different speeds when turning corners. You are currently the victim of a thing called axle wind up which is where the difference in roatational speeds can't be compensated for by a diff so translate to stresses in the drive train.

Only use 4WD on slippery stuff off road or in the snow otherwise you will trash the gearbox, transfer case, diffs etc.

    Cheers

It seems more and more common that newbies to 4x4 and surfs are doing this. When buying my surf , I told the guy " I had never driven an auto , I had never driven a 4x4 , what do all these levers do ? "

He spent about 30 mins explaining the autobox , the 4x4 system , and when NOT to use it. If dealers are stocking these vehicles maybe they should learn a bit about them and pass on the info to the buyer.

Unfortunately most people only read this forum after they have bought the beast , by which time someone has inquistivly pressed that 4WD button !

        Nice Rant Mark!

Might be interesting if we "Mystery Shopped" our local 4x4 "Specialists" to see what they have to see when we test drive their vehicles.

Although I dont know if it could cause problems for our "Management" if we posted any thoughts and comments arrived at by a "Mystery Shop".

        Over to you lot!!

I did ask but only got the...
          *points at brake*
'Put foot on that before taking out of Park'
          *points at 4WD lever*
'That put's it into 4 wheel drive'
*returns to office out of rain*

Now I bought it from a dealer in Japanese imported 4X4 who owned 3 garages with repair shops. So I can only see that he didn't know (very doubtful) or that his repair shops make more money on people bringing them back on a low-loader (more plausible). I asked what the ECT button did but only got a shrug of shoulders!

Unfortunately for him I do all my own servicing so apart from the original sale he ain't getting more money from me. Needless to say my next Surf I'll be getting elsewhere.

          Cheers fellas

Im sorry to say that a few dealers between Brighton and Poole are now wise enough to show customers how to work the 4x4 systems on Surfs, and when not to use them.
I "inadvertantly" locked the transmission on a 93 ssrx at the Council building roundabout in Poole after the stealer thought it would be safe to select 4x4 on a nice dry road! Strangely enough I didnt buy it.....
Same mysterious fault occoured to one in Southampton in Northam, and another in Chichester...
I feel sorry now but these planks should realy know more than the customer about these vehicles, my theory is that if they don`t care enough to know the product, I want nothing to do with them!

Perhaps if enough forum users locked the transmission on dealers cars, they may make more of an effort?
Ok nicely done, when we dry off we can go find the boat!

You should have a sticker on the sunvisor, one is for greasing the drive train, the other is the shifting instructions, Yours should be in Jap squiggles, this is the UK version, for the non-bi-lingual people. print out and place in sun visor if you please.

and if you have a 3rd gen (96>) the it is as follows:

normal driving - 2H, lever in forward position

4wd diff unlocked (for driving on hard surfaces) - 2H, lever in forward position but with with 4wd button pressed in

4wd diff locked - 4H, pull lever backwards

Neutral - pull lever to the right

4wd, low range - 4L, lever to right and push all the way forwards (gear selecttor needs to be in neutral to select low range)
nee nar nee nar, i'm a fire engine!
