Peter dont worry mate everyone had a good day and a lots of fun even if it was a little short its all part of off roading. I hope the green lanes where good
The grid ref of the quarry is SD84674 18672, but the cops had no problem with us using the lane to and from the quarry just that they said that the quarry itself is owned by some lord who is living in Australia and who hasn't given permission for anyone to use it.
It's funny how they can look after the property of someone living at the other side of the world but if someone blocks your drive try calling them out then.
Cheers for that. I havent got an OS of the area at home, and wayfinder doesn't make a lot os sense without one, but I will check it out whilst I have time. My initial look at wayfinder is that the lane starts off as a byway but the vehicular ROW stops before the quarry, but like I say it's hard to read without the OS map in front of you.
well i can,t fault the police today who i dealt with but, i find it amazing instead of leaving us in a desearted quarry they would prefer us to drive up and down a track used by all people. also consider the fact that today we had 4 police watching a disused road consider the next facts
1 we had a brake in at work a few years ago took 3 days for police to come.
2 had car broke into wouldent come
3 had a stabing ouside gate at work closed the access for 5 hours forencis didn,t come.
4 had kids near home other week throwing bottles at cars rang police they told me of for rining them turned uo 1 hour later and said where are they
well thats it so yeh i can see how you justify 4 police guarding an empty lane and a disused quarry . next time i,m beat up or robbed i,ll know our resoureces are targeted at a good source i thank you all
Ok stand up and be counted if the police had a quiet word in your ear today?
I drove past in my Landy and there was about 8 Surfs all parked up with the ploice there. Were they telling you not to go into the quary?
The thing is they where Greater Manchester police.. 100 yds further up Rooley Moor Rd it turns into Lancashire so I dont see what the problem is. You can always get into the quary from the Lancs side (only 4 miles away up the main road).
I think some of you are calling it Haslingden quary.. its no where near Haslingden, thats 10 miles away lol
Cheers for that...yeah it because its on the way to Haslingden [a site we used play in b4 the farmer sold it on]

U are right about the fat faced one....he stopped us...pointed at his helmet and said POLICE! U are not allowed in here...now get out!!! Very nice attitude I thought!!! He scared my little one to death. And they wonder why people have an attitude with them! They should think before they talk to people the way they do.
Apart from the brush will the law, we really did have a good day.
Was nice meeting all of you, and watching the mad one!! hahaha.
Just got off the phone from Rochdale council who tell me the following:
Rooley Moore Rd is classed as an Ancient Highway from Wimsey Hill (near the cattle grid) and as such is only open to horse riders, walkers and push bikes (anything which is not powered with an engine basically). The quarry owners are planning to work the quarry again so I asked the question of "how would they gain access to the quarry if there was no right of way?" Now according to the council you do have right of way if you are working but this is down to the land owner to say if you can use the road and quarry or not.
I have just spoken to the quarry owners DP Williams Holdings and they have advised me that:
The quarry is still classed as a working quarry and as such Health and Safety rules must still be adhered to. They did not know that it was being used for
any activity and quoted "as long as they don't know about it and until they want to work it as a quarry again they cant see any problem with it being used, although they
could not be held responsible for any accidents which may happen" and as far as they know they have not advised the police to keep people out.
The council have in the past locked the gate at Lane Head to keep powered vehicles out but they have to be careful as the road is a Bridleway.
have been reading through some of the stuff on here and the internet and as far as i can determine D P Williams, the agents holding a lease for the quarry say that it is not being used and as far as they are concerned it can be used for whatever. The only thing they say is that it would be at our own risk. H&S etc. Surely if we could get them to write a letter to that effect then the police would have no right to chuck us off the quarry as they did yesterday.
The only problem that would leave is actually getting there as from what i can tell a lot of the routes are bridle ways. (it only looks like GMP are clamping down though not lancashire so entry from the Rochdale end may be possible!
Does anyone think this might be worth taking further?? the Rangers don't have a problem... The company holding the lease for the land don't have a problem just the plod!! A letter from DP Williams would solve their problem!!
Any Thoughts??
Edit:
I am putting on an attachment which is a PDF taken from the Ramblers Associatoin website (No I'm not a member) just using their anti 4x4 rubbish to our benfit!!
Have a lok at the bottom of Pg 11. It says that Ding quarry is being used by 4x4's legally WITH landowners Permission!!!! Not sure how out of date this is but backs up what i put earlier
It also lists other RUPP's and BOATS in the UK and the condition of them!!
Hmmm I can feel some expolration coming on!!
Right... Cant upload the attachment as its too big... Here's the Link!

It would be great if we could get a letter confirming we can use the quarry at our risk. Then it could be copied to forum members that would use the quarry in case the police or rangers try kicking us off.
As for access is it not just the GM police that have the prob so access from Lancs should be ok.
Anything that gets us a good play ground must be a good thing.

Is anyone a member of GLASS, because they could help? They have area reps who sort out stuff like this and a lot of expertise to draw on I understand.
Might be worth someone joining to get access the their help on finding other good lanes, especialy as the NERC bill goes through and the police get new powers etc. I'd hate to hear about someone getting their surf confiscated.

NO, he said what they dont know about wont hurt them.. they ARE NOT CONDONING THIS ACTION... they are covering their backs incase anyone does decide to go into the quarry and injure themselves.. they dont want to be sued for something they have no control over. They will not put this in writting as they dont really want the quarry being used in this way.
Who would be prepared to help clean the quarry up, ie recovering of burnt out cars and cleanig the fly tipping up.. this may help swing things for us?

Something like this would be good, just to get the recognition of being able to go into the quarry for a play-day. I would believe a few of us could be up for it.
Greg: Howz the poor ickle Surf m8. Still clambering for a clean in that engine bay
