    200 Bhp!

Just been in touch with allard. E mailed me back and he thinks that with intake mods, ecu upgrade, exhaust and intercooler should give 200 bhp+. Not bad eh! Big house move on at the minute but I am tempted I must addmit.

If we're going to talk really big, how about the V10 out of the new Dodge Ram pickup - same one as the Viper - 8 litres of pure fire breathing muscle - oh and about 6 MPG to go with it. You could stick a supercharger on it and go round the pit doing wheelies. Seriously though, if you are going the big petrol engine, still think the Small Block (ford or chevy) is hard to beat for a combination of low down torque, good power, and absolutely unbeatable reliability. Also it's in a package which isn't too heavy or too big to fit under the bonnet of the Surf.

In all seriousness I was just looking to get a bit more out of what i've got without drastically affecting the mpg.

If I was going for a replacemnt engine I would base it on the Rover/Buick V8 as parts are very readily available at realistic prices. Its also small, light and very easy to work on.

I would however still favour a diesel as the torque charactoristics are much more suited to this type of vehicle - much lower in the rev range (hence the thoughts / dreams about the VW engine). I know that petrol engine can be tuned for torque as opposed to power but they stil don't match the diesel for this.

          200BHP update

Just spoken to Alan at Allards. Good way to get power is the exhaust - 3" or bigger (first 9") then 2.5" or 3" for the rest (staight through). This will let the turbo spin up quicker. he is going to phone me tomorrow with a price for the ecu upgrade and intercooler - let you know.
          Cheers.

2000BHP Update [just had to go 1(0) better]

Nice one that will be an interesting start point.

One question - is their intercooler front mount or on top of the engine? - I seem to remember that it is front mount which will introduce turbo lag.

              Intercooler

Mounted at the front. Hopefully with the big bore exhaust the lag should not be too noticeable! I am off to powerflow tomorrow for a quote on a big bore exhaust - I'll let you know the damage!
              Cheers,
              Tim.

                Hi Tim, missed this post.

It is interesting that they did not mention the turbo dump valve as I would have thought to get to 200+bhp you would have to increase the boost pressure.

I think that I would also have to think about upgrading the brakes at that sort of power increase - any ideas

                  Ali.

I would think that an adjustable wastgate controller and boost gauge would be part of this.

I think that upgrading the brakes would be more important when increasing the weight of the vehicle. However a harder set of pads would be good if you were going to drive it hard as brake fade on the normal set could be a problem. Also maybe consider changing the rear drums to disks - possibly from a Prado.

                  Cheers

                    wastegate/brakes

Don't know I'll ask! From what I gathered just the above listed mods gives 200bhp. I race motorbikes so I take any quoted figures with a pinch of salt. But we will see.

I know what you mean about quoted figures - by the way do you know what the standard figure is, I've seen everything from 80 odd to 130

Do you race at Aintree ?? - I'm ussually there each month (watching sadly )

Pretty sure the 3.0 is 130 or ther abouts as standard.

                          Price of power

                          Hi Ali,
Have raced at Aintree 1999 I think! P***ed it down but still brilliant racing!
Taken a year out - moving house this week! And I am missing the Manx Grand Prix! Ho Hum!
Anyway went to see my local Powerflow bod. "About five hundred quid mate maybe more - it will take all day - biggest pipe we can do is 2.5" ye don't need to go bigger than that."
I think not! Typical rip off.
Allan came back to me with prices - intercooler + ecu all fitted about a grand.
He says the standard motor produces 130 bhp and to get 200bhp is easy!
                          Hope this helps,
                          Cheers,
                          Tim.

                            Tim,
Do you think he would consider a group discount if I got it done at the same time as you? we could chug it down together - I am in Preston.

Was there any comment of fuel consumption? Just the ECU was considered to have no effect or a POSITIVE effect on consumption, but at 200bhp....hmmm

I had a chat with Allard a few weeks ago, and they certainly knew their stuff, and took their time to explain stuff. If a few vehicles were done at once they would save a heck of a lot labour as they wouldnt have to measure and plan things twice....well thats the pitch anyway...

                            Regards
                            Udhi

Just for the record, mine is a 3.0 TD, KZN130, 1KZ TE (??!!its got the E anyways) engine, 1995 build date, Manual geared, 86K Miles, new timing belt.

We could do a before and after Dyno run and post up the finding for the guys and girls in here.

Deffo ask about fuel consumption - it is my daily runner and the mileage is mainly to prepare me for shocks rather than say yes or no...

                                Good luck
