The EGR valve is the main emissions control component in the exhaust gas recirculation system. The valve is located on the intake manifold, and opens a small passageway between the exhaust and intake manifold to allow a metered amount of exhaust to flow back into the engine. This reduces combustion temperatures and helps control the formation of oxides of nitrogen. The EGR valve is opened by the application of vacuum to its control diaphragm. Some also require a certain amount of exhaust back pressure before they'll open. On newer vehicles, the valve is electronic and uses one or more solenoids or a small stepper motor. The valve should remain closed while the engine is cold and at idle. It should only open once the engine has warmed up and is running at part-throttle. If the valve sticks shut (or is disconnected), NOX emissions will soar and detonation will often result (See Detonation and Spark Knock). If it sticks in the open position or fails to close all the way, it acts like a vacuum leak resulting in a rough idle, hesitation and possible stalling.

Detonation Definition: An unwanted explosion of the air/fuel mixture in the combustion chamber caused by excess heat and compression, advanced timing, or an overly lean mixture. Detonation, or "knock", greatly increases the mechanical and thermal stresses on the engine. Also referred to as "ping".

      EGR Mod

      Hi all,

I have been reading with interest about this EGR mod since seeing that ad on eBay for the ball bearing. I did the mod this morning using an ss bolt I had about the right size, and noticed first time out that the motor felt much more willing, especially when overtaking and at top end - even from cold.

One thing I did notice though, is that my oil pressure gauge sits higher than it did before the mod? Used to be quite low on tick over and about middle when running. Now it's 1/4 at tick over and high on a run.

Is this a good or bad thing? Would hate to have something let go as a result..

wlb. It is probably a coincidence that you oil pressure has gone up since doing the EGR mod.

I blocked mine off over two years ago and noticed a little more low end power. It also stopped that James Bond style smoke screen that you notice in your mirrors when driving at night.
        It's only a hobby!

Having read a few of these posts now on the EGR valve, most of them refer to the 2.4 but will there be a distinct difference if the same mod is done to the 3.0L..???

Yep. If you're gonna do yours, I know were you can get a ball bearing at a very good price!
