  • Hope someone can help bad shaking on gen2 3.0

Hi well found my new surf a few months back and here it is

Right the problem i have is that on slowing down under braking it shakes it self to bits and with the rear drums getting hot thought they my be wrapped so started at the back and worked forward.I have searched on here and done everything that has been suggested and cost a fortune but it still shakes. What has been done all shocks/rear springs, drop links, front wheel bearings, arb bush's,disc's pads(all pistons free),shoes and drums(with new springs etc).I adjusted these from what i read on here letting the handbrake do the adjusting when fitted. Now with the new rear drums on they still get way to hot so took it all apart again to day stripped all brakes back and front and checked all suspension and the drums are still getting hot.I even took it to a long hill put it in neutral on both sticks so transmission was disconnected and it still shaked. This is now driving me mad so any help would be great.

Did you say that you changed the front shocks?

    Front wheel bearings?

    Wishbone bushes?

Have not done wish bone bushes as these looked fine with no play. But as i was fitting free wheeling hubs did the bearings, the shocks felt weak so did them as well.

Wheels and/or tyres out of round/balance?

Tyre's are about 4k old and only just had all 4 re-balanced and tracking done as i thought this may be a cause. This is what i mean about the money got the truck at a reasonable price and i really like it but this shake is making it unbearable to drive and the money pot is nearly empty

Have you tried mixing the wheels up? Just to properly eliminate them from possibility.

Yep backs on front then mix all 4 corners. Then back again to how it started no difference. The only things i am thinking now is master cylinder or the level thing on axle(sorry can not think for the life of me whats its called ) now i guess these could be cause's of the hot running of rear brakes but not the shake.

Does it shake on slowing down/braking only?
                Is it an auto?
                Balljoints OK?
                Freewheeling hubs unlocked?

Sounds silly but have you checked the idler arm and or pitman for play in either the bushes or ball joints? Might be worth it for the couple of quid the bushes cost?

When you say shake itself to bits, as already asked, is it only shaking when you brake or does it do it without braking?

Have you checked the engine, is it shaking / rocking from side to side when running?

Could be only firing on 3 cylinders - faulty injector / glow plug?

                    Damaged engine mounting?

Don't mean to go over old ground but ideally need to know what part is shaking and when, in order to try and find the root of the problem

                    Hope this helps

Sorry yes only under braking be it fast or slow.God you just made me think and yes i did replace the pitman arm idle arm and all ball joints top/bottom.It is an auto and the hubs are unlocked.Engine has not long had a top end rebuild so had toyota glow plugs etc the last owners were in Ireland when a hose went so toyota fleeced them for the lot bill £5856.96 one of the reasons i got it as it only had 62k on it when the hose went. She only has 74k now.

If it only shakes under braking, then it would point towards a problem with the brakes. As you've mentioned previously that the drums on the back are getting hot, this would also point to a braking problem.

Have you checked the front disc's, they could be warped, if they are, the pads will be screwed as well. Eventually they'll destroy your drive shafts as well if left, if that is the problem. As for the drums, sounds like the shoes are out of adjustment, adjusters not working?

From what you say, it all points to the braking system for the cause of the problem

Thanks for the reply's so far So after my last post i went and picked up a friend (he also has a surf) and we spent the last 2 hrs trying some things with the my Surf.First we went on a drive as the normal and the shake is there.Next we tried a both in neutral run down hill still there. Then we went back to my friends jacked the surf up backed both rear drums right off so wheels spun total free, then clamped off the rear hose making sure when the foot-brake was on the wheels still spun.So off we go again do the same as above and it still did it but no pulsing through pedal or shake on steering as you would find with a warped disc.So we are now thinking gearbox/transfer but surly with them in neutral and it shakes rules this out and with free wheeling hubs all that should be turning is rear prop and axle, but this is me guessing. So keep the suggestions coming as i really want to get to bottom of this

                            Torque converter or ECU.
It still spins if the engine is running.

Try swapping ECUs to see if any different.

My friends one is a manual. So does this ecu just do the auto box and where would i find it ????? I take it if another ecu does not help then i am looking at a torque converter now i bet that's not cheap to swop about Could i try it down hill with engine off and both in neutral will this stop the converter turning.
