  • 3rd gen front wheel bearing replacement

    Hi

    Had a search round here for replacing the front bearing on a 3rd gen but can only seem to find 2nd gen threads.

    I have broken my top ball joint mounting on the hub carrier.

    I have got a new (2nd hand) assembly, but the hub is currently seized and obviously needs new bearings.

    How do I take apart the hub assembly to replace the bearing. On the back I can see a spring inside a seal which appears to be sat inside a cup that is pressed into the back of the hub carrier.

    On the front is the six studs to carry the wheel and through the middle are the splines that slide over the drive shaft.

    I need to take my spline and wheel stud bit out of my hub and put into the new carrier with new bearings.

    Any help would be most appreciated.

      No press here.

      Broke my top mount by being a numpty and changing the top BJ without a press.

      So got a spare and need to swap my bits into the new hub carrier.
      Am I best taking it to a 4x4 specialist with the bits and ask them to swap them over.

      Who would have thought a spring/shock change would have created this much work.......

        Any decent garage could do the job, doesn't have to be a 4X4 specialist.

        Print a copy the diagram for them though.

          Will do thanks.

          Will take my hub off tomorrow and take it to my local garage with spare bits and see what they can come up with.

          Wouldn't have this if i hadn't changed the top BJ....

          It all started with the springs, then noticed split brake hose, split dust covers and split BJ covers.

            Looking at the exploded diagram the whole assembly is pushed out from the rear of the steering knuckle. Or does the grease cap and seal need to come out first?

            Is the ABS ring also a tight fit over the axle hub.

              Not sure about the grease cap, seal and ABS ring but when removing the bearing and hub the usual process is to press out hub first from the back then remove the snap ring and do the bearing. New bearing is then installed, snap ring refitted and then hub pressed in. That's the way I have done this type of bearing before.

              Warning: If hub is really seized in the bearing then it's always possible for the steering knuckle to break at the groove for the snap ring.

                  Steering knucle replaced with new ball joints. Can anyone confirm the torque settings for top bottom joknts and the hub nut please. I found 80 for top 90 for bottom and 120 for hub. lb/ft.

                          So they are. Missed them!! Noticed the bottom joint torque not on there so did it a little tighter than the top joint.
