please help autobox no drive

Im in desperate need of help ive change the engine on my surf and now have no drive what so ever. thought it may have been the torque converter so i have just spent 2 days changing it and still no joy. truck was moved by some Muppet so i dont know if they have done any damage to gearbox. if anyone has any suggestions they would be very welcome. o before you say have i checked 4 wheel drive stick yes i have no drive what so ever. thanks dixie going bold fast but about to get very warm when the surf turns into a bbq

How long was it parked up for?

If the torque converter is all good (as you've checked it) and that drives the oil pump we'd expect oil pressure. That's all you should need to get a gear.....so how do you check there's oil pressure...pop a hose off and crank it briefly? Is there a better way (assuming no gauge to check pressure)...I'd guess at operating pressure around 75-100 psi....

If you have oil pressure then could sediment have gummed up the valve body while it has been parked? I had that once on an old Ford C3 box.

I drained oil before removing old torque converter and replaced it with 4ltrs of new oil. Ive had the engine running with the pipes off bottom of rad and no oil what so ever. Ive tired every gear possible with the rear prop off and front wheels in the air and there is nothing. I think it may have to be a new gearbox but really dont want to spend anymore money if I can help. Please if anyone has any ideas help thanks

Did you fit the torque converter back on to the 'box correctly?

Did you remember to bolt it to the flex plate?

Also 4 litres of oil doesn't sound enough for a full top up if you have replaced the TC.
Just drained my box and got in excess of 7 litres (2.4 auto) .

Is the flexplate the plate you remove to access torque converter bolts and why would this make any difference to on oil pressure? The torque converter already had oil in it and there refined to be the right amount on dipstick but will check again many thanks guys

Ok, cool, I wasn't sure if you'd replaced the torque converter...

the flex plate is the flywheel like plate the torque converter attaches to.

No, the flex plate is the thing the torque converter is bolted to. Did you bolt it back on?

If you did, my guess is that you've made an arse of fitting the torque converter to the 'box. Did you check the torque converter mounting face was the required distance behind the bellhousing to engine mounting face??

Yes I did bolt it back together and when putting the torque converter back on it made 3 clonks so I guess that's right. I've just ordered a new gearbox at just over 300 with delivery so back to it on the the weekend so will let you guys no how I get on. So fingers crossed please I miss the mud and want to go out with my mates and show there disco up lol thanks chaps
