  • KZN185 red button / park not locking

    Good evening all,

A quick question to the knowledgeable people out there.

I am changing the auto fluid soon and want to confirm that the filter is just inside the sump, and needs washing out with petrol etc and drying before being put back and sump re-sealed.

The other problem at the moment is that the selector will not lock in the park position. It can be pulled back at any time without pushing the gear change selector button. A while ago I was taking off rear prop and to release bolts at trans case end I pushed the red button to release the selector so I could rotate prop by hand to get to bolts and then lock back into park to undo them.

I was told that it could be the pawl inside the trans case and accessible whn sump is off. Or could it be a problem with levers and the little red button.

trans lever locks in drive to neutral, neutral to reverse and reverse to neutral.
It moves freely i all other positions, ie from drive down to 1. I was told it should lock in 2 and require button to get to 1.

Any views would be most appreciated before I change fluid and clean filter.

    Regards

    Andy

I wouldn't worry about the filter unless you have actual problems with the 'box.

Are you saying the gearbox dosn't actually lock when its in park? or just the lever moves? The lever lock out gubbins is at the base of the lever. If you managed to break the park lock pawl in the geabox thats pretty serious abuse.

      Hi

The lever won't lock in park. Engine on or off, no brake pedal, you can pull selector back into reverse. Maybe me being paranoid but when moving from park to reverse it doesn't feel to fully go all the way for "selector lock" to engage. The gearbox locks in park, but i'm worried the selector can be moved without pressing the shift release button.

Never noticed it before I used the red button to release lock so I could turn prop shaft to get bolts off.

Fluid due a change as it has a slight burnt smell to it, no shifting issues all seem smooth, but if filter not needed saves me some time.

Just a thought, could your red button (or the gubbins on the end of it) be somehow "stuck down" perhaps?

Not sure, didn't know how it worked under there, was it an electro / mechanical mechanism or purely mechanical. Is it just a case of lifting gear selector cover, or above box when on the ramps to get to it?

          Thanks

I had the selector apart on my 2nd gen to replace the bulb in there, and the red button lock mechanism appears to be a simple pin that retracts when the engine is running (signal from ECU?).

As for the shift button, as far as I recall this is again a simple pin that retracts with the button. Been a while since I looked, but I'd hazard a guess that removing the cowling around the level would reveal the mechanism, and possibly the fault.

Thanks for that, will have a look this weekend and see what I can find.
