right then, I've got a rattle/knocking form the front, does sound like it could be more front left than right but it is driving me round the bend..
So far we have replaced
Both top and bottom ball joints all round
inserted ball joint spacers so could slacken off the torsion bars
new shocks +2's
replaced CV boots and inspected CV joints
replaced both inner and outer bronze bushes..
but its still there!!
Could wishbone bushes cause something to rattle to the point that it sounds loose?
could the steering rack be loose or would I easily spot that?
The rattle..
Best way to describe it, its not constant, comes if driving along normal roads and hit a a bumpy section, small potholes, grooves etc, its the same off road either in 2WD or 4WD
off road if I go real slowly, its all fine (little knocking, but nothing worrying)- I get a chinking sound on big bumps, but that just sounds like the shocks..
so it sounds like the rattle is worse if travelling faster, ie on roads or over 15 along green lanes..
sound wise, it sounds a bit like an empty trailer does when its being towed, almost like metal knocking on metal but a loose rattle rather than a knock..
then there is the knocking - its not harsh, but I can feel it through the floor of the cab, when I get the rattle sometimes its accompanied by a knocking feeling.. sometimes the knocking with no rattle - but does seem to be getting worse
If I get underneath with wheels on the floor nothing seems loose at all
If I wedge a bar between the mounts and wishbone I can get movement, but not a lot - so would worn wishbones bushes cause any of the above?? at £190 for new bushes plus fitting I'm reluctant to just spend out if its something else.
I've heard a few people saying about loose steering racks, but again, how can a test be done?? Would this cause a rattle and knock??
anyone got any other ideas as I'm getting fed up of hearing it -I cant keep throwing parts at in the hope of curing it..
i don't have tall enough jacks or axle stands that I trust to get it up in the air and wriggle anything about, but if anyone does have some I can loan or even come to you and see if we can find it then that would be great
any suggestions
another question, how much work is involved with a SAS conversion - what sort of cost to get it done?? anyone want to do it??
Or any volunteers to give up some of your time to have a listen and help investigate would be brilliant
