i have no play in the wishbone bushes and no play in the cv joint and the front end still rattles. It sounds like n/s/f?
Until this thread came up i was just gonna wait for it to break lol
are you anywhere near berkshire, we could compare to see if its similar
I'm at the point now where its taking the fun form the surf and i'm on the verge of selling it (plus just bought myself a lovely little retro car too)
but then i drive ti again and remember why i liek it, just the knocking/rattle - so decided to turn up the stereo untill something does break..
and have gone round and tightened up/double checked all the body mount bolts too

Might have found the answer. Had a guy bought his Surf in today. He has had a knock for a while and has replaced everything on the front end, bronze bush, ball joints, shocks, wishbone bushes, body mounts.....everything....in the end he gave up and bought it in. We found the issue........
The bolt on the right of the pic (with yellow chalk round it) is loose. It won't tighten. When you get up close to it, rust can be seen where it has been moving. The bolt looks tight and when grabbing the wheel to check for play, it never moves. It was only after we drove it over rough ground while watching it, that we found it was moving. Problem is, it's a captive nut in the chassis and it's stripped........worth checking. Put a 19mm spanner/socket on it and see if it's tight....Last edited by Sir Plug; 22 June 2011, 08:11.

Your both right. The rod is the main anchoring point for the top wishbone but to the left of the pic (out of sight), the torsion bar bolts on. The loose bolt at the front of the car fits into a captive nut inside the chassis. This had to be removed and turned into a standard nut and bolt, a pain to do but it did the trick and all became quiet.....
