Strange thump after releasing break pedal

Hi got an auto 3.0L SSRX 2000 Gen 3 - normal driving come to a stop then when I release the brake pedal to pull away the breaks release OK but then a thump from whats seems to be like the rear, maybe rear axle or prop shaft. Wondered if anyone experienced this before.

To possibly eliminate some replies; I changed the shoes all seems good there; slight play in the prop shaft, but sound is deeper than this. Took it to an auto box specialist yesterday and he drove it (he has had surf; land cruiser and familiar with all -28 years experience) and he said it still might be the brakes - it is going in on Monday but I wanted to check with info from the forum. P.S. he beleives the gearbox to seems sound.

The slip joint on the rear prop needs greasing.

And it's brake, not break. Brakes are to stop breaks.

Thanks for the responses - is the slip joint easy to get at, would the guy at the auto gear box garage know of this if he was familiar with surf and landcruiser or is it a dark mysterious secret

If he doesn't know where it is, don't trust him to fix it. Did you check the jack was secure?

Yes Jack is secure - and even if it wasn't this noise is not the jack. The noise coincides with a slight jerk to the gear lever as though you where ingaging a gear. There are two guys at this garage and the one who drove it on Friday was not here this morning but just called them and he wil check this out. Another question asked (by the guy who has not previously owned a surf) was does the gear diengage (like the vectra) when you break as engaging afterbreaking could be the noise (this guy had not driven it but they do seem to know a bit about gear boxes).

Jus wait to see - if it is the slip joint bet I could have done it myself...

before you pick me up on spelling I meant engage not ingage and I meant to put disengage but on put diengage - very busy at work so always rushing and no spell check on here

Assuming you mean braking and not breaking (although most things on a Vectra do seem to break quite quickly), afik, the gearbox doesn't disengage drive.

And when someone on here gives you advice or makes a suggestion, no matter how oblique it is, don't poo poo it.

Does the rear diff whine? Are the engine and gearbox mountings sound?

Thanks - not poo poo'ing any suggestion just making clear that the noise is not like the bottle jack knocking on the seat pan muffled by the seat p- thats all.

There is no whine - the only inspection I have done is lying underneath with wife in the surf; hand brake on and wheels chucked whilst I instructed her to put it into drive and accelerate; than reverse whilst I inspected the mountings and bushes I could see from the position I way in - no real problem observed - most of the torsion seamed to be taken up ny the drive shaft - no noises at all.

All I can picture in my mind is the headlines in one of them small local newspapers,

"WIFE DEVASTATED AFTER SHE CRUSHES HUSBAND!"

Not taking the pi*s mate, it just made me laugh. I was reading this to maybe learn something. Sorry I couldn't help you out

you said you changed the rear brake shoes. was there a lip on the outside edge of the drums from wear in the centre. that lip can cause a bump from the back as the new shoes aren't sitting square.

i've seen that problem many times before and my surf had the same.

you can either have the lip turned off by a machine shop or just use an angle grinder and take your time.

ps - remember the safety glasses.

just an idea and might save you garage costs for something simple.

No mate - drums were in good order and to be fair the shoes did not really need changing but thought as I had bought them I would change them - thought that the shoes were low causing as the thump noise was happening before I changed the shoes.

Yes appreciate the mental image of me under the truck and I thought about it myself as wife had recently upped my life insurance


thanks for the suggestions - should have aresult from the garage soon and hope it is what Bushwacker think - that is that the slip joint needs greasing.

Just added the quote in so readers can see my problem and answer in one - Bushwacker adivsed I should grease the slip joint on the prop shaft - and it cured the problem - quite astonished that grease alone could prevent that thump noise - thank you all for your inputs - garage only charge me a drink
