Freewheel hubs Problem

I'm trying to fit freewheeling hubs, the AVM ones in this sticky http://www.hiluxsurf.co.uk/forums/sh...ad.php?t=60178

My problem is that when I re-fit the centre bolt, the whole hub locks up, I can't turn the wheel. It looks to me like the centre bolt shouldn't be re-fitted. Fitting it seems to lock the drive shaft to the hub as the washer diameter is greater than the inner diameter of the splines on the manual hub and the drive shaft now sits back in the hub, rather than proud of it, if you see what I mean? I can't find any reference to not re-fitting it. I only see references to fitting it back on.

Anyone got any ideas?

You need another slightly smaller washer underneath it, to stop it clamping the inner part of the hub to the shaft.

All the AVM's I've fitted do this, not sure why. Just a design oversight.

The bolt only really a backup to the circlip that stops the shaft slipping back out the hub, it dosn't do anything if the circlip is in place.

Not really an answer but just my 2p worth. The centre bolt and washer are there as a last resort type thing - they don't bolt any on as such but the dia of the washer is such that it stops things falling apart. I think your real problem is that the shaft doesn't protrude through the hub.

Mine (Hiroler's) didn't.

Saying that, the bearings needed tightening up as they were sloppy so that may have allowed the shaft to protrude a little bit more??

i see what you mean today i put my AVM freewheeling hubs on tried without a washer in and they lock up but i had 2 ready and that sorted the problems.

lol, yeah, they only work out £10-£20 more. (or did a year ago, things have gone up a lot since was last ordering stuff!!)

Bumping an old thread, no need to start a new one.

Does anyone know if this is still the case (the need for a smaller washer underneath the original one) or has the 'design oversight' been rectified? I'm hoping to fit these at the weekend and would like to be prepared.

If you dont get a reply to whether it's a yes or no then i would get the washers and fit them anyway to be on the safeside

Good advice. I got some washers so It'll be trial and error.

Just a quick question to satisfy my curiosity more than help me with the fitting of the hubs. Excuse my ignorance.

Once you fit the free wheeling hubs are the original wheel bearings redundant when in the unlocked position?
