Too right JimL.............struggled a lot with the near side, not looking forward to having to go through it all again....sweating just thinking about it .

Parts won't be here till Tuesday at the earliest (yet to order them), bearing, front seal & rear seal so car's off road till Wednesday at best. This side sounds a lot worse than the other, sounds like the bearing may have popped a ball or two .

Dabigman - will take some piccy's this time and do a write up asap.

Hi playmates l am getting quite alarmed at hearing more and more problems ariseing about the 3rd gen rear axles and hubs, what sort of milage have these vehicles done that are having the problems.
Would people who have had problems please put there milage down, l have a 1996 3rd gen SSR-X with nearly 189000kms on the clock and not a bit of a problem on the rear end in the 6month it has been on the road.

Bob the problems seem to stem from the outer seal not holding back water. My bearings (both sides) were without grease and as you can imagine very dry and rusty.

This problem only reared it's head after wading at Robin Hood Bay and Langdale, I don't think under normal road use the bearing's will get wet so even if your outer seal is a bit goosed your bearings won't get the grease washed out and rear bearing failure occur (my thoughts)

As you requested milage 72,500kms - 45000miles

i'm sure a bit more hammering will see it through!

gotta wait till thrsday for bearing cos i now realise it will need replacing too!

and oops... for 2x £14 bearings my bill came to £354.73!!

Just found the answer to my question in post #24.



Both the hubs seem to have of play in them, about 2mm in/out and about a 1mm sideways. Drum and shoes are covered in gunky oil/grease.

wouldn't go by instructions as posted... not much cop!... gonna need a big ass puller... time... patience... and some heat to get the rings on to re-assemble

it's a piece of !!!! getting the half shaft out, but then you gotta pull everything off them... i used a sykes pickavent puller with about 3ft of extension on it and you gotta be dead careful little bit tighter... small tap... bit tighter.. tap... etc, etc.
then the shrink rings need heating up till they're red hot to get them back on... and you gotta be quick to get them on right before they cool and shrink on in the wrong place!

edit: not that i'm saying your instructions are duff... must have worked for you!... but i didn't find them helpful, and i don't know how that tool could have possibly had enough power to pull your foreskin back, nevermind getting anything off the halfshaft... especially without damaging it!

(hope this doesn't sound bad... i'm not being nasty about it but it seems to sound that way!.. i'll post it anyway!)

Instructions were posted as to HOW I did the job (sucessfully) The reason I posted them was to give people and idea as to what is involved when tackling the job, you obviously looked at the write up then did it your way, fine, but I dont really see your point in slagging off my method and the tooling I made to sucessfully do the job.

Worked fine for me BOTH sides without ANY damage, no need for heat when replacing locking rings if you have the right tool.

Tool for removal is a pulling tool utilising the taper on the drive shaft as described, why use a 3ft puller on the end of the drive shaft when there is suitable anchorage 3" from the bearing??What's the difference in a 3ft pulling tool or pulling tool nearer the bearing?? As far as I'm conserned a pulling tool is a pulling tool and one that has a shorter pull will have a lot more tensile strength than one that is pulling 2ft 10" of nothing.

Pressing the bearings, locking rings and ABS sensor gear back on piece of !!!! WITHOUT HEAT using PROPER TOOL.

After doing the first side and sussing out the best way for me it took me all of 45 minutes to do the second side, thats removal of rings bearing abs sensor, clean up and refit of bit's, not total job time that must have been about 90 minutes give or take a few fag and brew breakes.

Your comments have really !!!!ed me off, you try to do people a favor and get it thrown back in your face...........I wont be bothering next time.......................... ....file has been removed.
