  • Excessive smoking?

Having been off road earlier today, the truck did not exceed more that about 2500rpm, was leaned over on some silly angles and generally had an unusual day from what it is used to.

Once back on road, the rpm was higher due to being able to go faster. One thing i found, especially on loading the engine and going uphill, was that it was really smoking quite badly from the exhaust at one stage. This was far more that what i would just call 'diesel smoking'. The smoke was very black in colour and there was plenty of it for a while.

What would cause the engine to do this? I appreciate it was a different type of driving and at higher revs than what it had just been doing all morning and afternoon.

Any suggestions, and is it anything to worry about?

The truck is a 3.0 ltr TD with manual 'box.

    Dirty air filter?
The usual cause of black smoke.

Really? I changed it about 2000 miles ago.

Would that be gunge getting into the filter whilst taking it off road?

And if so, best clean or replace the filter tomoz?

Did you go through any deep, muddy water?

Not that deep. I created a wave at one stage which covered my near side headlight, but nothing over the bonnet. The water was very muddy though.

If it covered the nearside headlight, then chances are that the airflter got wet/muddy. The air intake ducting is behind and to the side of the headlight.

Cheers. I'll have a ganders tomoz to see if that is the cause.
