Thats the first time I've seen cup washers either side of the MOUNT itself. They're only required in the outer positions. The mount itself does the job of the cupwasher on the inner side. What you have now is metal on metal, on a flexible joint. It's only gonna wear something, and probably the non-replaceable mount.

So do you reckon that the bush should go direct to the mount with the cup on top?

The reason I am befuddled is that the ones I took off had the 2 cup washers on either side of the bush.

It threw me and I wondered what was the right way!

I would tend to totally agree with you mate, it makes more sense!

            Cup washer->bush->mount<-bush<-cup washer.

Hellmett, I'll just add that I do apologise unreservedly for my earlier post. My disposition shouldn't affect a response, and I appreciate that my initial reply could have been misconstrued somewhat due to being a tad vague. My apologies.

Gary, I saw that too - before he deletes it. Oh, and I didn't edit his post either!

Matt, it takes a big man to apologise. Respec'

Yeah, the order Matt posted is correct. The inner two washers are superfluous.

                Matt,

                Apology accepted mate!

As far as the rest goes, thank #### I now understand how to put them on!

I've had them on, off, on with washers, off again etc. etc. etc.

I now have to take them off again, groan!

My back is killing me and to top it all the ###### Surf fell on me when the jack gave in!

                (Oil operated the seal went).

It landed on my shoulder, if I hadn't of had the wheel under the the rear diff I would have been squashed!

Scared the pish out of me!

Kerist! a Surf is one heavy motor!

Just lifting one of the wheels nearly gave me a connery!

                Cheers fellas!

Gary, thankyou. Again, sorry for my behaving like a t1t earlier.

Would you like that I delete my second post, btw, or leave it as is? I've not touched it yet as I don't like to hide my mistakes. (Plus it gives you the complete and provable moral highground over myself). If you wish, however, I will delete it.

I think it would be better if we BOTH delete the things we wrote.

Just in case someone else comes across the same problem, does and search and sees it.

They might think we are all lunatics!

                    Cheers Matt!

I believe they tarred me with that brush ages ago.

If Wodders will edit his posts, I'll make it so that my other posts don't look quite so eclectic.

                        Just one more question guys!

How tight should the nuts be?

Tight enough to squeeze the bush until it bulges or tight enough just to hold it all really solid!

                        Thanks!

                        Gary

I personally work on the method of get them finger tight, then give the nuts a couple or so complete turns with the spanner until you see some slight compression of the bushes. That should be ample.

It all depends on the bushes as to what/where cup washers are used. If you look at the ARB chassis mount there is quite a big hole in it. Toyota have one cup washer with a lip to sit in the hole at the top to centralize everything. I reused this one with new bushes along with a washer at the top and botom of the rod. If you have a bush with a lip that fits the hole and which will centralize the rod then I think you could leave out the Toyota locating washer. If you don't locate the rod centrally then I imagine it would wear or get noisy.

I washers I had to take off were totally shot mate, and I doubt I could use them again.

Getting the rod mounted centrally is quite important so I am trying to figure a way around this.

The new cup washers are generic and don't have any lip.

They move around quite easily so maybe something to "pack out" the rod is in order!

That should work. I just can't think of what you could use at the moment.
