Ok help required again please. Replaced the cambelt/tensioner, lined up the timing marks but the engine wont turn over by hand. Does this mean the valves are bent am I doing something wrong? With a spanner on the cam bolt it will turn approx 1/4 of a turn but no further. Thanks in advance.
Whos the guy on here to get a 3l head from?
NEVER, NEVER use the cam bolt to turn over an engine
allways use the crank bolt!!! un told damage can result,
it can stretch even a new belt!!! take care.
Gman
EDIT Don't use that belt now, throw it away, it's possibly
stretched now and ready to fail. even more cost.
Cant see what the difference is in turning it over by hand using the cam or the crank? How can it stretch the belt?
You are trying to pull over an engine with a 25:1 C.R from the top,
belts are designed to pull the cam. not the engine. If you continue,
damage to the belt/engine will result.
The front run of a belt should be tight. ie.cam to pump to crank.
Pulling from the cam is the "slack" side, the adjusters are working
backwards. belive me!!! don't do it.
Ok, worth asking. Turned it over by hand 3 times, everything lined up so tried to start it. Didnt sound right and failed to fire up so now in the process of removing the head ,what a job! Thanks for the advice fellas, new to surfs but not one to give up.
Are you sure the cam is timed correctly, not 180 out?
the cam lobes on No1 should be pointing up and the
lobes on No4 pointng down all these are at TDC. on No1.
timing mark positions below.
I will check before I go any further. Which is number 1? Is it the lobe nearest the front?
Cylinder No1 is at the front of engine.
the lobes are the sort of pointy things
on the cam shaft above that cylinder,
and BOTH should be either side of upright
sort of like a letter "Y" with the timing
marks aligned on the sprocket and plate.
Thanks for the info guys. Gman looks like you may be spot on with the cam 180* out. My cam has 2 white dots on it, one at 12 oclock & one at six. Just had a look now that the rocker cover is off & without doubt it was 180* out.Time to stick it back together & pray. Thanks for the help with this I will keep you informed of the outcome. Hope to have another go on it tomorrow.

Before you do anything,
REMOVE the belt, and turn the engine thru 90* clock wise,
then turn the cam thru 180* c/w there should flats on the
cam to help turn it, then, turn the engine back to TDC
(anti c/w) this method will stop the valves touching the pistons.
Refit and tension a NEW belt. turn the engine over by hand 6 revs
to check that all is OK. And like you say pray it works.
Good luck.
Gman
EDIT:
Your next question, why a new belt?
My question, how much for a new belt?
Next question, how much for a new engine?
Gman took your advice & got a new belt. Fitted it as you explained with timing marks all lined up first two cam lobes up & rear two down. Turning crank clockwise engine turns over but with a metalic clang each revolution. Is this normal or do you think it is the valves hitting the pistons?
Jeez, I wish I could afford to take it to a garage
