  • Head upgrade question

Having a nightmare! Got a k-reg diesel 2.4 Surf. Only had it two months & has been faultless. Out & about yesterday and at about 20mph engine cut out, all the lights came on & rattle ,rattle noise. No overheating or any indication of anything before it happened. Timing belt light hadnt been on. (does work). Didnt try to re-start it as it sounds to me like the cambelt has snapped so looks like I will be stripping it down to find the damage. Thinking of sticking a new belt on & seeing if I can turn the engine over by hand & if it turns freely fire it up.
Couple of questions for you guys out there.

1: Am I wasting my time trying the belt first?
2: If I need a head.Whats the difference in the ones offered? I:E What is an upgraded head? I take it flows water better. Who is the best to get one from?
Ideally one ready to bolt on with valves fitted.
Gotta keep smiling really.I had just said to the wife what a good motor it had turned out to be

Thanks in advance.....Another Surf owner driving the wifes Picasso...argh Help

have you looked underneath,is the aircon and alternator pulleys and belts all on,is the fan "wobbling". have a real good look before you start pulling the head off.by your description of all the lights coming on,it does sound alternator related
    Non intercooled nothing.

If it's the belt, this is allways worth a try, just fit a new cam belt and try it. You've got nothing to loose. just make sure you time it up correctly. might
have bent a few valves tho.

      Best of luck
      Gman
If it aint broke, keep goin' till it is.

Have you looked here yet mate.
        http://www.roughtrax4x4.com/?doc=11&cid=606
        Or here
        http://www.milneroffroad.com/categor...p?cID=9227&p=2

Personally i would go with roughtrax cos ive bought from them before & they have been spot on every time.

P.S hopefully you won't need a head, like Gman said its worth a go with a new belt first.

best check the bottom pulley hasnt come adriftwhile your poking around under there.
if it is the cam belt then the head you want is the 3l head, not a 3.0ltr head.you can get a good one from stevo, see top of page.

Stripped the front end down on Saturday to find that it had recently had a new water pump & cambelt (unipart). Whoever tightened the cam belt tensioner "hadnt". The bolt wound itself out & shredded the cam belt. There is a hole right in the centre of the belt where the bolt has pierced the belt it has then been dragged up to the cam & got jammed shredding the belt.

Tip of the week ...."Torque your nuts up good and tight"

Ok help required again please. Replaced the cambelt/tensioner, lined up the timing marks but the engine wont turn over by hand. Does this mean the valves are bent am I doing something wrong? With a spanner on the cam bolt it will turn approx 1/4 of a turn but no further. Thanks in advance.
Whos the guy on here to get a 3l head from?

The 3l head is the 'uprated' head for the 2.4 - and Richard's offer is a cracker
