coolant and fans

Does anyone run the proper coolant (red) from Toyota, was told when bought car its the only thing to put in cooling system, its very expensive especially if radiator leaking, if not what other coolant would you recommend.

Also the two fans under engine, what are they for and how can you check if they are working, there must be a switch somewhere on the engine but where to look who knows?????

Thanks for your responses to my earlier question re 3 core radiator, got one on order so hopefully will do trick, also have fitted trans cooler so hopefully the combination will stop truck getting hot when towing.

The RADIATOR with 2 fans under the Engine is your Aircon radiator.

Bit of a belated response, but, you can only mix red with red. If any other colour coolant has been used previously, you'll have to flush the system with a vengeance to remove every drop of old antifreeze. You're better of using green, to be truthful, unless it is already using red. It has pretty much the same characteristics, but with a slightly shorter service life. It will however co-exist merrily with other types/colours of antifreeze.
