  • Injectors - cleaning?

Folks, was just reading another thread about fuel consumption and so many people are either bending the truth slightly, or I have lead boots, or so many other possibilities.

I suppose I get about 250 to 275 miles per tank, and I dont think I have a particularly heavy right foot. I've tried the proprietry fuel additive type cleaners with little change in performance / consumption and wondered if they really make a difference?

Fuel injectors are pretty hostile places, and the cr@p that gets burnt on must be pretty tough to shift. I'm wondering if a chemical (which doesn't seem that aggressive - you can buy it in Halfrauds over the counter) is really up to the job.

Would I be better pulling the injectors and getting them cleaned properly? There is a local engineering firm that does it.

What kind of job is it to remove / replace the injectors?

Might it be worthwhile trying some ATF fluid in the tank? (Might as well try to
get someone else to be the guinea pig).

To a full tank i get 340-360km, mixed driving. But mostly short trips round the town. So i suppose about 220miles/tank.

            Should i be worried???

On a run it doesn't seem to cost me any more than my last car (mk6 escort 1.8). I went from Ashford to Skegness and back over easter bank holiday 6 hours each way (2 hours of which is spent sitting in traffic) and used £80 quids worth of fuel.

It cost me a tank each way last year in the escort so about £75 in total.

I know my surf sat for a while before i got it, so maybe there are a few bits that have seen better days.

Where should i start? Glow Plugs, Fuel filter, Injectors?

TonyN has just replaced my injectors with refurbished (very clean) ones... (amongst other things)...

done acouple of fills already and last fill has given me 608.322 miles (979km) on 114.79 litres

That is a record for me... 24.15 MPG.

Do the injector cleaners make a difference, probably not. I had been religious about doing it for a period of time, then got distracted for a few months, didn't notice any difference.

Mileage oscillates between 22mpg and 24mpg... best thing for me is the control my right foot, and I can get closer to 24mpg.

I do have a lot of extra cr4p on mine though which probably doesn't help.

Did i mis-read that or did you say 114 litres? I only have a 65l tank according to the specs. I just managed to squeeze 60 litres in today and the lights been flickering on and off for a couple of days now.
