Hi eveyone hope you can help. Does anyone have any ideas on what could be wrong, when i start my surf from cold it will only change up to second gear but when it warms up it will work ok

First thing to do is check the gearbox fluid level.

You say the fluid level is o.k. but what is the condition of it, is it a nice translucent red colour or is it a murky burnt brown?
If it's dark and smells burnt, the fluid has had it and will need replacing.

The oil was changed in November last year just after my lpg convertion was done so should be fine.

I checked the levels when hot. What i have noticed is when it is cold it seems as if it is in the low ratio 4wd until it gets to a certain temp and then works fine is this possable.

Mine does it now and again, especially in really cold weather.
Can you change gear manually o.k.? i.e. Start off in 1. then shift into 2. then D.

O.K. I'm starting to get splinters now from scratching my head!
All I can say is either wait a couple of minutes in the morning before driving away or get an auto 'box specialist to check it over. If you do the latter, tell us what they suggest is wrong before parting with any cash.

Yes i know what you mean. I will have to try and find the nearest auto box specialist in the yellow pages. I will let you know the outcome when i can get it in to be sorted. Thanks anyway.

Well the plot thickens??? The garage i took it to phoned me back and said they could not do anything with it because they did not have the correct lead to plug into there computer, so i have it back and it is still the same.
I then tried to do the flash codes to see if i could find the problem but all i got was a light that just flashed and flashed and flashed and flashed and flashed and did not give any indication of a code.
So now i am totaly lost as what to do next.

I would find another gearbox specialist that relies on experience and not solutions flashed up on a screen, anyone can read a screen!

                          Well, except blind people obviously!

Yes i think i will but the next place that might be able to do anything is about 50 miles away so will need to sort out a lift.

I presume it was the o/d light you were watching for the code and not the engine check light. Just a thought
