  • pitman arm removal - angle grinder!

Got round to removing pitman arm and replacing it this evening,
    I tried a 3-arm puller - failed
hitting with lump hammer - failed
angle-grinder - won!! - cut through it, until just before splines, then wacked it with lump hammer and off it came. a solution to finding a 'rare' pitman arm puller. - very satisfying

only problem is... the old pitman arm ball-joint seemed to be fine, and its the steering box which is probably duff..

MOT on wednesday... first one of ownership of the 4runner,
its bound to fail, as there is defintely something dodgy in the steering,

I replaced my pitman arm and steering idler bushes last Friday. I had to resort to the angle grinder, even after trying to use a tool that looked very like the one in the Surf manual. I had to split mine off the splines with a hammer and cold chisel. If you still have a bit of slack loosen the locking nut on the top of the steering box and tighten a couple of turns. The Burgundy Beast thinks she's a sports car now!!
    It's only a hobby!

yes - ive tried to get rid of the slack in the steering using the adjuster screw on top. but even when its tight there is still slack - and when its tight, the steering is too stiff at mid-point, so I suspect the worm gears are worn
