  • Alternator connections

After takin out the alternator tonite there was 2 pipes to remove and they were mounted on the ports marked X in the pic. They are oil lines are they and why?

Also marked 'Y' in the pic is a sensor of some sort maybe but the red wire to it has been cut by a PO. Whats that about bearing in mind my engine was originally a 2LTE, and more importantly can I sell the sensor ?

Then there was another connection, it was like a fuel leakage return ring from the top of an injector. It bolted to the block behind the alternator. Whats that about? I'll stick that in the 2nd attachment (marked 'T')

The device marked Y looks like an old alternator interference suppressor, dont see many of them these days.

Well I'm 99% certain they're vac pipes, is there much oil? perhaps oil here is an indicator of further problems! Hope not, you've had enough with the Surf.

Time for someone with more gen than I,

Where's our guru Tony? , sure he'll be along soon.

No doubt Delboy too will be along shortly to tell me to blow in the hole and see what happens

Feckit Morr, this surf is a legend. Still reckon Lucky had more probs than anyone ever deserved with his one (all fixed of course seen as he has it for sale)

The 2 L-TE alternator has a front mount vacuum pump which is lubricated with engine oil.The oil is supplied to pump from a banjo fitting on the block (T?) and through a hose to another banjo fitting on pump and then drains to sump via another hose. The should be two vacuum connections. One large one for the brakes and a small one for the ADD and other vacuum components. This one starts at the pump and then enters a T piece up near AC compressor. When reinstalling the oil lines it is important to replace the sealing washers in the banjo fittings. They are a copper washer and compress when assembled to form a seal. It's a little difficult to see in the pics but the angled pipe marked X looks like the large vacuum connection and the straight pipe is the oil return line.

              Hope that helps

Damn ya got there before me Jim. Suck on the pipe.
Anyway, Morrs right, the two pipes in question should run to the brake booster. Oil in one means you have summit wrong. There should also be a smaller pipe at the rear which is the pipe which creates vacuum for the rest of the system, ADD etc. There should also be 2 oil connections. The splines on my alts main shaft went about 2 years ago and had to get it reconditioned. Cost about €250, but cheaper than €1500 for a new one.
Will take a pic of mine at lunchtime if ya want.

I'm sure the pipe marked X on the left in the first pic is the oil return line. The oil feed line is under pressure and this is why there are banjo fittings on this. The return line does not need them. There is only two vacuum fittings. One for brakes and the other smaller one for ADD etc.
