    Mornin

Has anyone out there ever taken the crankshaft pullies off thier Surf. If so I would be really gratefull for an explanation of how the assembly comes apart. I have taken the two seperate pullies off which were held on by four bolts. Now I am left with the task of taking the two remaining pullies off with a puller. The type of puller that is recomended to remove the said pullies is of the stearing wheel type which has bolts that screw into the holes where the four bolts were which were holding on the outer two pullies. Thats ok but would suggest that the pullies do not come off individually but as part of a larger assembly which includes the plate(?) or what ever the puller bolts are screwed into.
I have just spoken to the dreaded Toyota dealer and he has told me that the pullies are a seperate item. If that is the case then I am a little confused as to how they are fitted to the plate that has the puller attached. Especially as there appears to be rubber underneath the pullies.

Does all this make sense? Come on chaps, someone must have an idea what I`m rattlin on about!!!

The bit you have left is the harminoc balencer, it smooths out crank vibrations. Basicly its a hub, then a rubber ring then the pulley groooves, all glued together. It's all one assembley. If you use a three legged puller, you sometimes pull the thing apart at the rubber, then the outer part slips and none of the belts get driven properly (including your fan!)

Pull it off as you described, with a puller that bolts to the inner hub, and pushes on the crank.

The other part is just how they fit extra pulleys for other belts, it doesn't matter that you've taken it off.

Big thanks for that TonyN. If I could pick your brains a little further. You say that all the parts are glued together. On my surf the two pullies are floating backwards and forwards over the rubber and catching on the timing cover, am I right in assuming that that is not normal and that they have some how come "unglued" and to rectify the problem I will have to replace the hub with a new one which will come complete with new pullies fitted or is there some way of refurbishing the the old hub with new rubber etc and "re-glueing" the complete assembly back together.

If you search on harmonic balance theres a bit of earlier stuff to read up on, Delboy had the problem you seem to have I think, Tony too.

I'm at the same stage as you but cant be ar$ed taking the outer double pulley unit off by the 4 bolts if I dont have to.....but do I have to or can I just undo the 19mm crank nut and take the lot from there? I did this last year and cant remember. Word of warning Tich, think about renewing the cambelt tensioner while you are in there as I didnt last year and just reused the old one. Now Ive had cambelt failure and its either down to a broken belt or collapsed tensioner, watch this space...

I bought a replacement one last year from a breaker and that has a wobble in it now. Get a new one is my recommendation. I'm gonna see how good the one is on the spare engine i'm gettin at the weekend. If its $hit, i'm gonna buy a new one.
