Recently did my 2nd gen hub upright bushes due to erratic howling noise, not much wear to see when the old ones were out, but what a difference it made! No more noise, I did as others had suggested and removed the drive flanges from the hubs to immobilize the drive shafts to isolate the noise. Took the opportunity to do a couple of other jobs at the same time, track rod end/bottom ball joint/front pads. Greased the hub bushes and driveshaft well before replacement, when I was happy the noise hade gone away I fitted a pair of AVM manual hubs, so thats a job that shouldn't need doing again!
    regards

I assume they are the hub bushes we were talking about.

These are the infamous bronze bushes fitted to the suspension/steering upright. The driveshaft passes through them, when they wear or the lube is lost they howl like a banshee. The bushes are available from Milners or from Toyota. No way that I know of to relube them, they are a one shot deal when assembled.

            Bushes

            Hi Tony

Kind of threw the towel in when the bearing change failed to cure the problem, things got very confused as i'm now being told that the gen3 does not have bushes.

Was toying with the idea of removing the drive plates but I kind of know now that the noise is coming from the diff and drive shafts, just wish I'd known about that trick before replacing the sodding wheel bearing.

To be honest I would need Haynes quality schematics before attempting this kind of work myself, Im no mechanic!

Removing the shaft may be a better idea but then again the noise may be coming from whatever bearings are used to align the drive shaft as it leaves the Diff. At least this would prove that my front diff isnt grinding itself to bits if the noise disappears.

The main problems seem to be due to the fact that none of the dealers or Toyota themselves seem to be fully up to speed on Gen3 specifications. I've had a similar problem with my intercooler modification which is slowly being rejected by my ecu, basically because Allisport seem to have used Gen 2 settings.

Would love to bring the car down to you sometime, at least then we could sort out the issue of bushes on these Gen3's once and for all!

            Best Regards

            Mike

If its leaking oil then its time to change the seal, if no oil is coming out, and you have diff oil then the oil seal is still doing its job.

              Hello TonyN,

Could you please advise on where to source the replacement seal, I've tried Roughtrax and Milners without any joy, and the local Toyota dealer seem keen to help, but don't seem to know much about these import thingys.

              Kind regards.
