  • LSPV bother

Hi, probably a real noob question but here goes. My wagon is a Hilux pickup 1994 2.4D 2WD, just bought it recently.

I've been told by Toyota that the LSPV (load sensing valve) is seized solid - makes sense as the back brakes are too powerful when it's empty. A new one is a heinous £330 from Toyota, can I do something with the old one? I've not removed it for inspection yet, but it's not something I've seen before - the plan at the moment is to take it off and see if I can figure it out/make it work/jam it in the low load position perhaps as a last resort. The brakes otherwise work fine, and I've flushed the fluid out for good measure.

If it is banjoed, can anyone recommend a breaker? I've tried a load but if it isn't 4WD the answer always seems to be no.

You could certainly take it off and see if you can free it up, it's really just a piston in there which is moved by the rod which moves due to the height of the rear. As you move it to simulate weight going on the piston moves to allow more pressure to go to the rear - it's basically a restrictor valve. Probably the piston has seized and you may be able to work it out of the cylinder with a bit of work, clean and polish the cylinder and refit. Just take pictures of it before you remove and take apart so that you know how it goes back together.

There are quite a few breakers of Hilux pickups however you will probably find that it is the same unit as the Surf and consequently HILUX (Bob) or Streetluge Chris may be able to help as they break Surfs.

      Cheers

Nice one, will check these out. The breakers I spoke to reckoned that the one on mine would be different to the ones on 4WDs, but most of them just didn't sound interested. The Haynes manual (God help me) doesn't mention any variations, but then is pretty short on detail anyway, and other than the usual differences between models I don't see why the 4WDs would be that much different.

          Hi guys

Took a look at the thing this weekend, there is a fair bit of play in the rod at the opposite end from the valve, but the valve itself moves up and down without too much bother. There doesn't seem to be a return spring (I didn't diassemble it), and if you push it up it needs to be pulled down again, I don't think it'd fall on its own. Does this sound normal? I guess if the rod end wasn't wobbling then it'd push it up and down no bother.
