  • Clock gone!

After owning my surf for about six months I decided to investigate why the 'wireless' sounded so dire and invested in some of those radio removal keys and set too to investigate.
After about two seconds of looking I believe I had soiled myself quite heavily at the frankly scary condition of the wiring and so, armed with my trusty crimping pliers and lots of info gleaned from this site, got on with putting it all to rights.
I now have a quite nice sounding affair with rear speakers and an aerial that goes up and down on demand.

Thing is, the clock seems to have retired! All the wires that I messed with had obvious homes to go to. Except one that became live when the lights are switched on, which I took to be for dimming the front of the radio- a facility my radio doesn't have so I taped it up.
The heater plug is in nice and tight, no evidence of any loose wires floating about and I cut nothing just re joined so can't have interrupted any existing connexions. (could I?)

Obviously I've done something I didn't ought to have, does any one know where and how the clock is connected?

The clock has it's own plug. It's a black, flat shaped plug that can sometimes get lost behind the dash as the sections are removed.

Thanks for that, I'll go and loose some more skin from the backs of my hands this weekend.

Could you give me an area of the back of the clock to aim for? Top, bottom, left, right, centre?

I did have a bit of a half hearted rummage around the back on Saturday but couldn't feel anything. (other than the pain)

Seen something else on here saying it could be a fuse which is common to cig lighter, glow plugs and interior lights. Think I've noticed the lights OK so didn't ought to be that.

My clock was dead after I had a radio/cd fitted by my local ICE shop.
Didn't notice it for a week
Thought I would have a check behind the clock and sure enough the connector was not connected, I reckon the guy fitting the radio must have either forgot to reconnect when he did the install or knocked it off putting it all back together.
I got to it by removing the speedo/rev counter main surround and squeezing my hand through the gap, found a connector floating around, with a lot of pain and blind faith I managed to get it back on the clock and all is well.
It connects right on the back of the clock so easy to tell where you are fiddling.

At least you can have a quick feel to see if it has anything connected or not with out too much dismantling.

        Pete.

From memory, the clock has a permanent +ve, ign +ve, dash lights +ve and ground. Perhaps you've chopped one / pulled one off when sorting the radio, though as Vince says, you've possibly yanked the plug out.

Yes, sure it's been pulled by me trying desperately to get a few more precious millimeters of wire from the riddiculously short trimmings back of a previous owner. The only things I chopped/ did away with were the new ground, which someone had added in cable big enough to run a cooker. And a live, twisted and taped around the cig lighter (when there were perfectly good ones that Toyota had the fore sight to put there).

The radio is on a plug and once that's out the cage comes fairly easily leaving a hole big enough to get my head in. Weekends have never been such fun since I bought my Surf!

            Thanks everyone for the pointers.

              Hurrah! The clock returns.

Eventually traced to cig lighter fuse. Must have accidently touched something against something I didn't ought to while sorting out the previous owners spaghetti.

Unfortunately I now have no excuse for being late home.

Thanks for all the pointers and help.
