  • Red button (uh oh!)

so....read all about red button situation.....but can anybody help?
just bought replacement surf...never had this problem on my last.

can't get the gear lever to move without pressing red button.....checked break lights & they are fine.....

It occurred to me (when driving home in gear 2 instead of drive) that there is no illumination on the gear stick panel....is this standard in older ssr model (h)....or is the fact that there is no illumination maybe something to do with electrics (fuse??) hence red button comes into play.

Heater doesn't seem to get warm either...whats up there......??

    Any ideas?

Have donor car if bits can be used......

    thanks!!

You will have a bulb under the shifter for illumination mate it's prob blown hence no light, on the heating you prob need to bleed the system up properly, if still no heat after that giz a shout back, your red button prob hmmm could be the red button switch under the trim could be stuck and realising fully to allow the shifter to move properly or the button on the shifter is sticking ie your pressing the button but the mechanism isnt moving underneath it.

Whats wrong with the donor, head gone or other big problem?

Heater hopefully will be down to the mechanism, if not it could be another donor car.

List your model, engine size, fuel type and anything else relevant to the car you have as it will help those trying to help, and really you should have someone who knows cars to inspect the one your going to buy, its not really a good idea getting them looked at afterwards unless you know you can get your money back. Cheers!

to late...fell in love & bought it.....on the plus side engine is sweet!

donor car was written off before xmas....some noodle drove into the back of her.....but all good apart from no rear end!

have been doing a bit of reading of previous posts re heaters....& got the fear as though it was a little odd that the passenger footwell carpets are wet.....(heater matrix?)

so just been out and had a ferret around, pulled up carpet & underneath that (underlay??) is soaked through.....

doesn't smell odd or tate funny......so wondering what the shizz is.....??

taking her in for a check over tomorrow......so a pointer on what this problem could be would be really helpful!

            Thanks

if the carpets wet its defo more than likely heater matrix has finaly give in. if your taking it to a garage the matrix is not real expensive but the labour will as pretty much all the dash has to come out to change it, thats if its a gen2 surf.

ok...so may seem a little thick (sorry!! but everyone has to learn somewhere!)

not sure what the difference is......gen 2??

this is new surf....(soggy carpet & no heat!)

                  & this is outgoing surf....(writeoff)

Assuming that writeoff is gen 2.......????

If so.....can bits & bats be transferred to new one???

bear with me for being dense......but hey ho!!!

The bottom pic is a gen2 same as mine the top one is what I'd call a gen1 or mk1 tbh I'm not sure if you can change bits over from your old surf to the new 1. I haven't had much experience with the mk1. I'm sure someone who has will be along and say yay or nay for that question, sorry. Oh and at least ya got the balls to ask a question and find out. My theory is if you don't know ask. So your not being dense if you don't know.

I take it you know you can't shift out of park without foot on brake.
So check that when you press the brake pedal it is disabling the lockout on the shift lever.
May mean removing plastics on centre console to physicaly see.
                      Remember arrows are silent.....................
Don't forget to tell everyone its indestructable as seen on top gear.......

They are both 2nd generation surfs, the top is the pre-facelift model. They are essentially the same vehicle, with a few ( mostly cosmetic) differences. The heater matrix will be the same Im pretty sure, although as already said a bit of a fiddle to change.
If I was you Id be checking the water level at the rad cap and at the expansion bottle before I drove it around much more as well. 2.4s dont like to be overheated, which is what happens when water is lost.

                          Wondered who bought it........

If its got no smell or taste sounds like the cooling system has water in it and no antifreeze ????
If the carpets are that soaked sounds like its been leaking a while, ask the previous owner if they were wet in his short ownership of it.

                            thanks guys.....!!

She's in for a healthcheck at the moment......so we will see....

no mention at time of viewing(s) of soggy carpet or lack of heater action....but did not specifically ask that question....so no big surprises!

going back to the red button issue.....even with foot on break & engine running have to press down red button to change gear.....major pain!!

But I do love her soooo.......!!

keep you posted...& thanks for your help!!

so she's back from docs....& looks like radiator has hole.....

whether this is the cause of heater not getting hot....possible? but why the wet carpet??? what do you reckon??

apart from that & a couple of other little bits......she's good!! phew!
