  • Another rear window problem!

    Hi, I have a 1993 generation 2, 3.0 turbo diesel Surf.

Up until I sent the Surf off to have a towbar fitted a couple of days ago, the rear window worked perfectly via both the key switch and the centre console switch. Now the key switch will not lower the window.

After I told the guy who fitted the towbar about this problem, I didn't like his response and decided that I didn't want him to touch my Surf again and will try to fix this myself [gulp].

The centre console switch still works fine and will raise and lower the window, so I'm assuming that my relays are OK?

I have checked that the window lock switch is set to unlocked, the rear wiper is properly seated in its home position and I have sprayed copious amounts of WD40 in to the key switch - to no avail. I don't get a 'Back Door' warning either.

The only thing I can think of is that the key switch has developed a fault or the wires from the key switch to the relays have.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks,

    Jerry.

    Yippee

We've managed to find and fix the problem with my rear window.

After a process of methodical elimination (big words!) my mate and I discovered that one of the two wires that goes between the key switch on the tailgate and the relay board had been pulled apart somewhere.

We traced the wire from the switch and tested for continuity at various points, funnily enough it was in the sheathed section of wire which comes out of the bottom of the tailgate and goes behind the bumper and up into the chassis to the relay board which had snapped! We just soldered in a new section and hey presto!

snapped wire or snipped? - by the chap wiring up the tow-bar electrics!?

Had a rear window/door sucess story tonight myself for 4runner. Have had the key switch on tailgate working since I got the vehicle, always used the internal console switch.
Took the key switch apart at weekend, and found out all wires and contacts in the key switch were corroded.
Went to Overton dismantlers nr Aberdeen on way home from work, they have a 4runner - but switch wire has been nabbed already...
but they also had a surf, got the wiring and contact switch from lock from that, also the metal place that scews onto the internal part of tailgate - as mine never had that, just the fabric cover.

window works fine now by key on outside!
nice to have it all working, the runners had corroded on bottom of window - sorted that out a few weeks ago by getting new ones from Toyota dealer for £14,

Lets just say that the wire had snapped, it looked like it had been pulled apart. I suspect the tow bar fitter had done it by accident when he routed the tow bar electrics throught the same chassis gland as the tailgate electrics.
