Now i dont know whats going on ..Is there other things that should be checked before i start looking for an alternator

ok get hubby to get multimeter out, jump start surf, when ticking over get him to put multi meter on battery terminals,it should read between 13.5 and 14.5v if its above or below u have a problem, most likely alternator but check earths first,if it is charging fine, then it will be one of two things u either have a drain on battery,ie courtesy light left on?(check the boot one) or i found out with mine (twin batteries same as yours)that only one battery will jump start the surf easily,so i'd assume one battery gets the "juice"before the other so try putting your battery on the other side

        battery probs

thanks for the help. I put the new bosch battery on the left ( drivers side) its a 830 cca, so it was the only battery connected. i left the old right side battery in with the positive terminal connected only . i cant change the new battery to the other side as the terminals will not reach. does the alternator have a belt that should be checked also ? should i also replace the glow plugs ?

        thanks

                re alternator

that sounds good to me...at the moment i am in edinburgh and going back to leeds tomorrow. let me know how you want paid. can you tell me a rough estimate what would be a reasonable cost for fitting it by a garage.

                thanks again

A very max price i would expect to pay would be £30.
I will only take about 30 mins to take one out and fit the other so £30 is an over top fee really.
Give me a couple of days and i'll sort the alternator out for you.It should be sent by Tuesday at the latest.

Hi shirley, depending on where you are in leeds, take the truck to chequered flag in beeston, surf specialist.

                          re battery

On further inspection i noticed that the garage who checked my battery had put the neg lead back on the old battery!!! so it must have drained the new battery. i still think that there is a problem as when i checked the new battery with the volt meter the voltage was dropping. Could this be that i need to take it for a run , then test it again?

                          thanks shirl

i'll get the alternator off the truck and test it properly on my truck just to be certain so give me a few days to get it out and tested then i'll let you know via this thread. It's only so i know its good and save any trouble if it don't work proper when you get it
