  • Starting Problem

I have a 92 2.4 Surf (and very nice it is too) but I'm getting intermittent starting problems that are completely independent of weather, temperature, time since last use.

Essentially, when I jump in and go to start, it sounds like the starter motor is turning - basically a whirring noise which starts to grind if I try a little to long.

Can happen after a short pitstop on a long journey, after leaving it for a day or two or even five minutes after a failed start!

Presumably some sort of starter motor problem???

the cogs turning but not shooting forward to mesh on the starter ring, check the wires/contacts on the starter and solenoid, also have a look here

      starter

as gemini says could be that or it could be the teeth on the ring gear broken or missing in a certain place you would have to take the starter motor off to check this out if geminis theory isnt it
