  • What's it for?

"It" is, I think, a resistor. It is mounted at the bottom right hand corner of the air con radiator as seen from the front of the car. In my case both wires have corroded away. A nearby connector (with the outgoing wires cut off) coming out of the wiring loom has a black wire and a red one with a black tracer.
I've only had the car a few weeks, so still getting to know it, however everything seems to work except the air con. So, what's it for, and if I replace it will the air con work??

    Thanks,

It's a resistor for the air con condenser fan. Here's an explanation on what it does from a member on the Aussie site.

Basically the resistor is used for current limiting. The way is works is when the fan is on and the vehicle is moving, the airflow produced from forward movement will try and slow or stop the fan hence the fan draws more current. The higher current the hotter the fan motor. The higher current the higher the voltage drops across the resistor there fore less voltage at the motor protecting the motor and wiring. Also if the fan motor were to seize then the resistor would burnt out and not the vehicle wiring.

        Thanks for replies.
Resistor now repaired and condenser fan working. Just got to get the a/c gassed now I think.
I'm in Tonbridge, work and home, it's a dark green metallic Surf if you see me around. 2m/70 cms small dual band aerial on the roof. If that means anything to you I'm G7KNS, usually monitoring 145.500 and RE.
