  • Yet Another Rear Window question

I apologize for sticking another thread up as I know there are lots on here ( I have read them ) but I am still unsure as to what my actual problem is.

My rear window has what I would describe as an intermittent problem as my rear window will go down and up with the centre consol control switch then all of a sudden stop working. For example yesterday it was not working at all then this morning when I 1st get in it it worked up and down no problem only to stop working half an hour later.

I hear the CLICK at the back with both the key and the switch inside but nothing happens.

I took it to the dealer I got it from and they told me it will be the relay that is faulty. Only thing is its £241 to buy which I dont have spare at the moment.

Can anyone offer 1) advice or opinion on the fault and 2) a good place to look for a better priced option ?

Its a 95 plate SSRX 3.0 TD Auto.

Could it be wiring as apposed to the window motor control relay ? If the relay was buggered would it not stop working altogether ? The intermittent factor casts doubt in my mind hence I am asking you guys on here who know far more than I do or am likely to.

    thanks
    Andy

well if I can do that it certainly beats £241 lol

In all seriousness though for a moment, is it easy for a novice like me to do this ? I admit I am not the most car wise person when it comes to faults and fixes I am more apt at fixing someones aches , pains and strains than Mechanical or Electrical problem lol

Could you tell me in laymans terms where I get this box and what it looks like ? Do I need to remove the panel inside at the passenger side rear ?

Much appreciated for any help here , I have a young family and the lack of ability to use the rear window is killing me with prams and messages over the seats lol

thanks mate , I have a soldering iron and also a mate who is very good with cars etc he usually does all my service work so I could rope him in if I can get a guide of sorts, all the better.

So thats what the relay box looks like then , which part of that are you replacing from Maplin ? And if you can find that link to the guide that would help alot , I appreciate your trouble and time here.

If it is a fix that can be done easily I am prone to try it but alternatively I could bid for the ebay item but only thing is you often get outbid at the last minute and thats frustrating in itself.

ahh your some man thanks alot mate. I will run this by my mate as even though its good instructions I am prone to being unlucky ( or is that clumsy) with cars etc. lol

I will get him to come read this and see what he thinks I am sure he will be able to do it however. Talk about a huge saving if this works I will be well chuffed.

Thanks again for all your help I will repost with my results and any problems encountered for future reference for anyone else doing it.

              cheers

When you go to replace the relays, reflow the joints with fresh solder before desoldering. It'll make it easier to remove the old solder without ripping the pads.

I will be sure to point that out mate , I will let him read all this before he touches anything.

Thanks for the tip, its appreciated.

just something to add I don't know if it is significant.

I was stripping the trim and and removing the side panel inside in preparation for my mate arriving today to look at the job of replacing the relay's and I noticed that I hear the CLICK whilst pressing the UP on the Power switch on the console but nothing when you press down.

Does this indicate one relay has gone as apposed to 2 of them ? I bought 2 new relays so I am best to change out the two for up and down ?

                      thanks again

Its doubtful that both relays would fail at the same time, but it's good practice to replace both at the same time. It's a lot easier than doing the job twice. There is also the possibility that you may have an intermittent cable in the loom to the rear door, but get the relays sorted first and then you know you have eliminated one possible cause of problems.

well got both up and down relay changed with new ones as prescribed but this has made no difference at all ... Still the click when pressing up on the switch and nothing on the down press of the switch.

What would be t he next port of call my fellow sufers ? lol Do I need to replace the motor next ?
