    Hi All,

My 3.0 TD surf has the 'winterpack' with the 2 batteries. Unfortunately they have a tendancy (esp since the rubbish weather has set in) to flatten themselves so that when I try to start it in the morning, there's little to no charge left to turn the engine over.
I've changed these over the weekend for some brand new heavy duty versions, but unfortunately the problems persists. There does not appear to be a problem with the drive belts and I have definately not left any ancillaries on, so I'm guessing the alternator could be at fault and not charging correctly? or could it be worse than that and have an unidentifiable shortcircuit somewhere in the system?

Any ideas if this could be a possible factor and if so how much and where I could pick one up from?

    Thanks all once again

Get hold of a nadgered one... plenty of breakers about... and get it rebuilt... plenty on here about my one... that I got rebuilt... Should be ale to get a good 90 to 100 amps out of it, just by replacing the rotor inside...

I know its easy to overlook this, I once did it myself. Clean the terminal clamps up inside and make sure they are proper tight.

If your alt was at fault (rhymes) would not your red light be glowing on the dash?

Think I might change my name to yours too!

There doesn't appear to be anything different to normal, and no charge/warning lights to give anything away either.. I guess I'll have to meter the output from the alternator to rule that out first, then panic!

You could still have an alternator problem, I've known of instances where the alternator will allow the current to "bleed back" out of the batteries, the only solution will be to replace the alternator.

There should be a minimal amount of drain from the batteries without any load, much more than 120ma will drain them quite quickly.

When the engine is running the alternator should be charging at about 13.5 - 14.4.

              Hope this helps

Have you checked the start motor? Could be dirty contacts or bad motor coil.

Have you put an ammeter in series with your positive teminal (you need both positive terminals off with the twin battery set-up). I found a fault on my neighbours Mondeo after the AA had changed his battery and he had forked out £85 on a new starter motor. The lights were staying on inside the boot when it was shut! It was a cheap fix. He just removed the bulbs.
                  It's only a hobby!
