  • Another rear window question....

Had my surf about a week now, having problems getting the rear window to go fully up. Goes down ok then goes up but gets stuck about 3inches from the top. After greasing everything in sight the only thing I think it can be is the motor? Anyone got any ideas on this before I order one??

    Cheers

Clean out the grooves in the rubber with Isopropyl and cotton
buds. You get a lot of sticky gunge in there. That's all I did with
mine. Never needed to grease it after cleaning it.

Ok thanks I will give that a try, also someone mentioned silicone spray on here I think, will get some of that too.

Getting a bit frustrating now, sometimes it will go up but sometimes it will get stick. I cleaned the runners and sprayed them all with silicon spray (which has done a great job on all the other windows may i add!) Now im just wondering if it's worth taking the motor apart and greasing inside becasue I read there are some sort of gears inside there? anyone help?

        Cheers

Pull the carpeted panel off the inside of the back door. Remove the
screws to take off the metal panel behind it. Take off the plastic
behind that. Greasu up all the gears and runners in there. If you
want to take the motor off, there are three bolts in the top of the
motor housing facing towards the back of the door, so you'll need
a 12mm ring or small ratchet to remove them.

However the worm gears etc do get worn eventualy and the motor looses power. so if you take it out and clean it and it still doesn't move nicely, swap it for the rear passenger side one which is identical but has less load on.

You can lube the gears with motorbike chain oil which is waterproof so that it stays greased for longer.

Ahh right thats what i thought, so even greasing up the gears in the motor may not totally solve it, thinking about it it does seem more of a loss of power issue but i'll crack it open and have a look. I did look into getting a new motor and I really dont wont to have to take out one from anywhere as i'd like to keep all the windows working. I found one on Roughtrax whichs is £130 so thats my last resort!

                Thanks again.

If the gear part is worn, you can just buy the gear head. It's listed
as a regulator, for some weird reason. About £60-£70 for that bit,
                  I think.

Thats the big mechanism bit under the metal panel isnt it? The teeth look ok on that to me but I thought there was some kind of gear or something INSIDE the motor bit?

                      .
If you swap em before it fails entirely its entirely possible that he worn motor will cope fine with the lighter rear passenger window. after all it seems that the tailgate window one always dies in the end whereas the back door ones hardly ever do.

Shjould only take an hour to try it as long as you have a little 1/4 drive socket set to get in at the awkward bolts.

once you have swapped they regularly come up on fleabay for about £60, sometimes as little as £30 so you can shop around for a spare.

Can't remember offhand. It's about a year since I wragged mine apart.
The gear section on top of the motor assembly is the main weak spot.
As Dave mentioned, you could swop and keep an eye on Ebay. Other
thing to check is if you have any scr*ppers with a Corolla in. They use
                        the same motor assembly.

                              suitable motors for a swap

I've had a 4 runner b 4 I found that passenger side motors from Supra, celica and corrollas all worked fine..looked like the same motor.. certainly the mounting holes matched fine. I did have to swap the plug over as it was a different shape. But cut cut crimp crimp and three motors for a tenner from the local s$$$$py doesn't seem too bad!
just bought a g reg surf ssr ltd. How do I find out the spec engine etc?
                              cheers.
                              dinna say eh?....say fit?
