  • Pre-Heater Timing

    Hello
My first message to the site. I had probs with starting and the light only on for about 1 sec., also black smoke etc. Took it to a diesel specialist who fitted a by-pass (button) so that I can press for power to the glow plugs.
This is working fine but he says he now needs an electronic diagram to fix the problem permanently.
I also having head problems and waiting to choose the right mechanic for the job.
I have got the answers to many questions from this excellent site, especially those ones where you get a load of crap from those mechanics who are trying to prove something, due to their lack of good diagnostic skills.
A good tip for dealing with these people is to note how many of their questions ask about you as a driver and how important your car and driving is to you. If they are genuinely interested in helping you then their honesty will come through in the work they do on your vehicle.
    Cheers

In general, nobody turns the key when the light goes off, theres maybe a 5 second wait after which you hear a definite clunk as the timer finishes lighting the plugs. Soon as you hear the clunk - give her a dig (not the girlfriend - the engine).

The engine heater light is only on for about 1sec on mine but I usually wait about 5secs. Always starts first time.
The attachment is an engine wiring diagram for your expert.

What engine does that diagram apply to SS? If it applies to 2LTEs how come it doesnt show the ECU. Also where is the starter relay to be found?

At normal UK tempertures the first high power phase of the heater plugs lasts for between one and two seconds only. This rises to around 6 secs max at -20 C. This is when the light is on and you should crank as soon as possible after the light goes out to get maximum advantage of the hot plug element.

Thereafter, the plugs go into a secondary phase of low power which will last for up to 120 seconds - again depending on temperature, while the engine warms up. Any clicks and clunks you hear from various relays may not be related to the heaters.

          Cheers

While what you say may be the intended run of things exmee, I'll bet 95% of folks on here get the best result by waiting for the click and ignoring the light

I don't disagree - everyone will find their own best way.
