  • Mostly electrical Q's

Hi I have just bought a 92 2.4 TD Surf.I have a few questions for you, which i hope can help me.

    1. Rear Fog light. There isn't one i can see, no switch on dash etc, or any broken brackets. The car has an MOT done in September, is this a legal requirement for the UK?

    2. Heater control lights. The background lamp on the cold and hot display isn't working, is this a simple bulb job or difficult. I've had the dash apart and couldn't see how to change them.Is the bulb easy to change. Also on the bank of buttons that direct airflow, should these be lit when the lights are on or only when you press them to direct airflow? If the bulbs are blown, is it easier to change the whole control.

    3. Rev counter. When i bought the car the needle was below the stop. I removed the clocks and relocated the needle to its rightful place. When i switch on the ign, it jumps atraight up to 3000 rpm and operates between 3 and 6. Is this a common problem and if so, what is the fix?

    4. Finally. The leccy aerial is broken, i've been quoted over £100 from Toyota for a replacement. Is there a cheaper option available? Are the aerials easy to fit - say 2-3 hours max?

    Hope you can help,

    many thanks

    Brad

      1. Rear Fog light. ... Yes you must have one to pass your MOT, not fitted in Japan, these are added upon importation.

      2. Heater control lights. The following applies to the later model Surf, but I believe is similar to yours too...... The bulbs to illuminate the panel are fitted from the rear, remove the complete assembly from the dash to see them..... The individual buttons light up only when selected. These are LED's not bulbs. If none are working I would suspect deeper problems with the panel, if its just one or two it may be that the LED's have failed, this is unusual as they have a very long life, new ones can easily be inserted if you can use a soldering iron.

      3. Rev counter. Certainly don't think this is a common problem, never heard it described on here anyway. I assume its only showing high revs, as you certainly wouldn't want your motor doing those Kinda revs all day on idle. Previous owner obviously found it a problem too, hence the needle stuck under the stop. I assume the rev counter gets its signal from the ECU, if this were faulty to the extent of believing it was doing 3k revs at idle then I suspect you would also have all manner of other running problems regarding fuelling etc. The problem probably lies at the other end, ie possibly the rev counter itself is faulty... anyone else any ideas??

      4. leccy aerial ..... what Chillit said!

Rev counter: Judging by the lack of the foglight you bought it from a dodgy importer... Not like me!!! If the speedo face has been changed the needle will have been removed, when replacing the speedo needle you need to have the ignition turned on with all the clocks plugged in to allow the speedo drive to spin up BEFORE you put the needle back on.

Good luck with your head gasket, never seen a 2.4 that didn't need one!
