  • Headlight mod

Right, please bear with me for this...

Has anyone tried the dip/head light modification where you run the power for the dip/head's directly from the battery using relays and use the stock wiring to switch the relays. If you use heavy duty wire you are supposed to have much brighter lights. I have poked around Yotatech on this and a lot of people reckon it's a great mod, especially if you have good bulbs.

I run Phillips Vision Plus bulbs and they are very good, pure crisp white light and a free set of super white side lights.

    So has anyone tried this??

    Ciaran.

Haven't tried it but I'm thinking of it. With the stock Toyota wiring being thinner than the cotton that holds my trousers together, the losses must be pretty huge. I'm going to be putting in a separate fues box and relay panel to run all the main lights - Headlights, Fogs, Driving lights plus roof lights (gonna run the cables and just mount lights if I ever start to go off road).

I'll also run decent size earthing points to various points on the car as the earthing on the Surf is not always easy due to the nature of the body mounting etc.

I reckon you can get a lot more out of the standard lights so I reckon it's a good mod to do. You can actually get pre made complete looms for the lights to do this mod.

    Cheers

Not done this to the surf yet, but fully intend to.
Have in the past done this on a Fuego, a Vectra and several Mk11 Escort, always with good results.

        Cheers guys,

I found this site www.suvlights.com they sell complete harness kits. Including heavy duty ones. I'm thinking og getting one. But first I want to put a meter on the stock wiring and compare it to the battery (with the engine running) to see if there is any voltage difference.

OOOH let me know how you get on.
          I'm running all the normal lights plus 2 x 100w spots 2 x 55w fogs 4 x stobes 2 x 5w alternating rear reds 1 x 150 strobe beacon (on the roof)
so potentially alot of amps. all the extra stuff should be ok as I've installed mega heavy wire but it would be interesting to see the difference on the stock lighting.
          NO WORRIES!

After some advise over at Yotatech, I'm not sure I'll get this now. I have a set of Hella 550 fogs and 4x spot lights to go on the roof rack (to be fitted) so extra lighting should not be an issue.

But.... what I might do is construct my own harness upgrade, it will be another mod for the dark evenings that are upon us!

With all those extra lights you probably wouldn't notice the difference with the harness mod anyway.
What are you doing anyway, trying to Lamp rabbits ?

I diddn't mention in my last post, but I never bought any looms to do this, I always made my own, dead easy

i believe they're a standard H4 fitting, so any motor shop has a selection to choose...
don't get the cheap "blue" lamps though, as after a while they discolour the reflector and make your headlights appear yellow!!
