  • White Dials and Speedo

    Folks,

need some help... fitting these white dials and taking loads of photos... and the speedo won't work. No movement at all. Does anyone have an electrical diagram for the instrument cluster, and a more detailed one of the speedo itself.

The odometer works, the needle just won't move...

Update: Found one for the instrument cluster (which doesn't really help), just need the speedo... Just want to know where to prod to see if it is getting (translating a signal) info.

Checked that the needle isn't binding... just wondering where the rest position for the needle should be...? Does the dial need to be powered and then seat the needle...? any suggestions...?

Did you put the new dials on without taking the needles of and if you did what a few of us have done is put some small 3mm washers under the securing screws just to push the dial down that bit more, also i had trouble with the rev counter not working and had to pull the needle up a nats to release it.

Yup, did that... Had to move the tacho out a nats thing... I did remove the needles... the dials wouldn't go over the needles... reset the tacho with no problem, on account of remembering where it idles.

I suppose when the speedo does actually move, I'll have to recalibrate it.
I'll need to find a rolling road with a reckless owner.

I have a sneaking suspicion that I have not put the speedo cable back on, but that would be much too obvious (read stupid). I'll have another look in the morning. Dials light up nice though, look great...

Ok, so its an electronic speedo, it has a pin to stop the needle. The odometer is mechanical (but I don't remember fitting the speedo cable back in), but appears to work. How can I meter out the back of the cluster to check if everything is in order?

Ideally you should of left the needles on it can be done it's just a bit tight getting over the needle centre, plus there is no cable to connect not on mine anyway as it is electronic as for resetting the speedo needle maybe some who has changed there kmph dial mph might know cos i think if they used the proper replacment ones and not the stick on ones they would of had to take the needle of.

Mine had a proper replacement speedo dial on but in my haste I cut off the rev counter dial before reading the "do not remove the dials bit!" so left in in 2 bits and installed new one over the top.
Its a tight squeeze over the needles but not too bad if you do it at an angle. Electric speedo on my Surf too - relief after reading instructions for doing it.

anyone elses inverter really loud when on the blue setting???

The blue setting is best reminds me of the new golf dash's,the greens ok but i can't see much of a difference in it apart from the line under the mph marks, anyway i keep on blue full brightness looks cool man!

Some photos to be going on with.

Almost step through. There is a very clear set of instructions on Codlord's site on how to get to the cluster to replace the cluster bulbs so no need to repeat that here. The double sided tape is from Halfrauds, for sticking number plates on...

Notice that the inverter has been placed behind the cluster (quieter there). I have routed the control down where the hand brake is.

The power is spliced into the head unit illumination loom. Note the two cables on the head unit connector. The one on the corner (left - green with grey stripe) is the illumination +ve (brown with silver loop), the one three along is the -ve.

I have also duck taped the power lines inside the cluster case so that they don't interfere with the dials operation... I have also taped over the holes in the cluster so that not much dust gets through...

Of note is the shroud around the indicator bulbs on the inside of the black front piece. If the Tacho dial face isn't quite square, is a very close fit and may get deflected, leaving you with a gap... I found a little persuasion of the edges around the black shroud and fitting the front from the tacho side first.

My engine check light was also missing... good idea to swap out the 'ard bulb... When I have to go in again (!), I shall swap that over...

i might move my inveter to behind the cluster (its next to/behind the hazards switch at the mo) but its not top priority but I def should have taped the holes to keep the dust out!!! DOH!
heres some pics to add to andy's

My engine check bulb is also missing but could they be not needed as there is an engine check light on the rev counter next to turbo light,it's just a thought.

                            Right, I think I have a plan.

I am going to blag some time on a rolling road. Wind the Surf upto 30mph and place the needle on the dial, wind it up and down a few times and make sure that it is reasonably close to where it should be.

Just don't relish the thought of flying down a clear road trying to get the needle onto the spindle on the speedo....

                            Anyone got any other suggestions...?

Not much use to you now Andy, but....

The thing to do, before re-moving the needle, is -
remove the cluster from the car...
remove the clear cover from the dials...
gently prise the speedo needle over the stop...
temporarily re-connect cluster and switch on ignition...
mark the 'Powered up - At Rest' position of the needle.

Carefully prise the needle off of the spindle, use two teaspoons...

                              Fit the new dial face...
temp re-power the cluster and re-fit the needle, in line with the mark made earlier...
gently lift the needle back over the stop...
                              re-aassemble everything...
                              job done.

Not sure about the rev-counter but I think I would try the same procedure.

Hope that helps some of you,
                              Alan
