Dash Warning Lights - problem!

I started my 1994 3.0l TD 4Runner today, started fine but the Turbo, water in filter, brake, engine oil, charging, etc warning lights did not go out?

Oil pressure gauge reads fine as does charging gauge!

The only out of the ordinary thing I have done before this (a couple of days before) was turn on the ignition and not start it so I could wind down the window, left it about 5 minutes before winding window up and turning off ignition.

Will be having a closer look tomorrow, but wondered if anyone has had a similar experience?

I suspect an ignition switch problem.

Its very similar to when the alternator gives up on life. I'd get it checked to see if its charging.

Or a dodgy earth wire in the dash somewhere.

I had another look this morning, Checked battery and alternator connections and all appear OK. Battery voltage when not running is 12.35V, checked again when running, drops to 11.95V, alternator appears not to be charging. Also noticed that the dash ammeter has dropped from yesterday.

Checked the voltage at the alternator and it's the same as the battery voltage as expected.

Disconnected the alternator, started the engine and checked the no-load voltage on the alternator, 0.7V, looks like the alternator has had it.

I did think about searching for information on replacing the brushes, but the way in which it failed, OK one day and had it the next, makes me suspicious.

I'm contemplating taking it to an auto electrician just to get it checked out fully and make sure that something other than wear and tear has not caused the problem.

Open to suggestions if it will save me some cash!

Try ringing Milners or Roughtrax, could'nt see them listed but they should be able to get them.

I think your easiest bet to just take the alternator to a auto electrical place, they are all very similar and it should be rebuildable quite cheaply.

Tried Milners, but no luck, they did give me a contact number for 2nd hand parts, but he did not have one.

Also tried all the local breakers, nearest was a landcriser alternator, but not quite the same part number although it was off a 3.0L diesel engine.

Tried local auto electrician and he could not get an exchange unit or parts to rebuild it! The auto electrician did say that it is normal for toyota to put on multiple warning lights on the dash when a single fault occurs.

Found a local parts supplier who found a place in the west midlands who were pre-pared to take my unit and service it, I wont get it back until Friday earliest and it ain't cheap (but cheaper than toyota at £540 for a new one)!

Just a thought before you send off the alternator, give Denso a call, they are from memory the alternator manufacturer ( & it is from memory & without going out to check on mine )

Over Xmas the boss lady's Celica had electrical problem ( see other thread on forum )

To cut a long story short, i eventually got an alternator from a scrappy, having been to an auto-elect, & my reaction was how much did you say. ( or similar words )

So started to look for parts for the alterator, ie diodes & voltage regulator, hence Denso's address, however it was Xmas, no one answering the phone, so went to the scrappy instead.
