  • 3.0 into a 2.4 (manual)

Finally started the conversion, pulled the 2.4 engine this afternoon and it came out almost too easily! I know the rest of the project is not going to be easy though! There is not many treads covering this conversion, but the ones that I did find all said that it is not worth the hassle. I'm not doing this just because I want a 3.0L (that's part of the reason), the 2.4 has always use excessive amounts of oil and the smoke is just getting embarrassing now!

Next job now is re-positioning the engine mounts on the chassis, I've not done much welding so tomorrow is going to be a learning curve, at least they are not in plain view!

Will keep updating this thread for anyone else who might want to attempt this in the future.

    Matt

Cheers Nic All going well so far... famous last words!!! Over the weekend I did a dry fit to re-locate the engine mounts, will be pulling it back out today so that I can finish the welding and fit the clutch which arrived today, if all goes well and my welds hold, I will have the engine in by the weekend.

Hopefully next week I will be picking up a mechanical fuel pump from Tony N, if so I might not need the ECU! I really hope so as the electrics is the main reason why I have taken so long to start the project!

see you have many uses for the 16T rope you have in the back of the truck!

hope all goes well and you have it up and runnig for 23rd sept!

That rope has come in very handy - going to see brother in law this weekend so hopefully I'll be able to get some more!

I think the 23rd is a realistic deadline, I hope to have the engine running by next weekend if all goes well. Hope this weather cheers up though as I am doing it all outside

Have you had any Engine loom and Ecu issues yet?

And what is your plan for these going into your 2.4 body?

Im in the process of putting a 2.4 body onto a 3.0 chassis so am very interested in how you have gone about this side of things.

I'm hopefully getting a mechanical fuel pump off of a 4 runner next week, this will mean that I don't need an ECU to run the engine. Good luck with the body swap, I was thinking of doing something similar but with a hilux pick-up body, that will not be for a very long time though.

Yesterday I decided that I would get a grown up in to do the welding for me. I really don't want to have to pull the engine back out after the first green laning trip because the welds failed!

Considered a pick up swap with a double cab body as need back seats and like the look but value the long load space when the seats are down which I would lose with a shorter pick up bed so made sense to keep a full body on it.

Is there any power loss, economy or other engine running diiferences when ditching the ECU?

Just wondering how much the ECU has to with the running of the engine - I can only compare to my previous dealings with turbo'd petrol engines and the ECU controlled all sorts because of different boost loadings etc.

I haven't had a lot of spare time recently to work on the truck, but I'm getting there slowly, the engine is now in and is staying in! I know just need to connect everything up, this is going to be the interesting bit. It seems the 23rd wasn't such a realistic deadline... wishful thinking!!! Hope to have the engine running this week, but I have a feeling there is going to be obstacles around every corner!
