Cheers, that's good to know but I'm curious as to what caused it to cut out months ago or maybe that was an earth fault I unknowingly cured? Still need to figure out why the safety lock switch isn't working, the 10amp 'stop' fuse is ok.

Shiftlock won't work if one or both of the tail light bulbs have blown.

Think they are ok but will double check. I'll get the starter off and check it. When the break down bloke had a look over the starter the other day he said it only had a cable from the battery going to it. Is the ignition feed wire hidden from sight?

Yep, there's a black plastic connector near the main battery cable terminal on the starter.

If one of your batteries is weak/old it will pull the other battery down especially when craking the engine over, which will also accelerate starter solenoid contact wear.

Ok thanks for your help. Batteries appear to be a few years old but I've tested them and they are perfect.

Test them as you're cranking the engine.

Thanks for that, I've already cleaned up any earths I can see in the engine bay.

Does your Surf have an aftermarket alarm/immobiliser fitted?

Yeah an old cobra alarm. My old man thinks it could be this.

Just an update for those interested, turned out it was the poxy immobiliser intermittently not working so once bypassed all has been good for the last few months.
